The Matador restaurant closes.

I wonder how much of what I remember about Phoenix will be gone before I return.

The Thomas Wolfe novel "You Can't Go Home Again" seems rather prescient right about now...

That is a shame. I've lived out of state for the last seven years (but am moving back in a few weeks), and I haven't been there since a visit about two years ago. It was always a place for a quick and reasonably good lunch when we were downtown.

I would not be too worried. There is still going to be a lot of what you remember, including, but not limited to, restaurants.

Eh...it's a restaurant. Unfortunate, but these things happen, and in more vibrant cities restaurants tend to come and go anyway. Downtown Phoenix has seen a bunch of interesting restaurants move in over the past couple of years. For one to close is unfortunate, but I'm not sure I'd qualify it as historic.

Interesting issue from this article regarding Matador: After 3 decades, 'Matador' restaurant closes

The Matador currently owes slightly more than $400,000 in federal, state and city taxes dating back to 2008, according to tax-lien documents obtained from the Arizona Secretary of State's Office and the Maricopa County Recorder's Office websites.

About $48,000 of that tax-debt is owed to the city, according to the documents, which Anagnopoulus said is probably another reason the city wants them out.

When you can't pay the piper, the piper will put you out of business. Moderator cut: snip

Yeah, I know. Probably overreacting a bit - but it seems that EVERY place that I hung out at has either changed hands (and reopened as something entirely different) or closed. I realise that 15 yrs is a long time - maybe my hopes for something familiar remaining as I remembered it were a bit unrealistic.

Probably not - but The Matador has been around (in one iteration or other) for 47 yrs. That's a long time for a restaurant in ANY city.

What an awesome location. He must have been somewhere else originally though. That parking building on 1st and Adams looks fairly new.
