You know, your just not figuring all the variables. If someone owns their own place or rents a cheap room from someone for $350, doesn't have a car, no health insurance, or has medicaid, doesn't pay for the utilities. Eats very cheaply and only shops for clothes at Goodwill, watches OTA TV, reads, and has slow internet, it can be done.

There are tons of retirees here with incomes that small. They live in mobile home parks or own their homes outright and clip coupons and get by. Park rent is even less than $350/month. You can buy a mobile home cash for under $20k.

I actually predict a huge % of the US will be retiring that way, if they don't learn to save better and if the stock market doesn't go nicely up for a long time. I'm tempted to buy some nicer MHPs someday.

Gotta be living in Mom's basement and riding the bus to live comfortably on that.

Is it possible for a 26 year old male to live on that salary in the PHX area? I have no debt, no student loans and no kids. Ideally I would like a 1 bedroom apartment in a decent area close to things to do and maybe some bars/restaurants.

Any advice or input would greatly be appreciated.
Live in Phoenix on $36,000 is a CAKEWALK. Never get married and you'll be set.

True, and a 5-6 hour drive from Phoenix to Laguna Beach/Newport Beach isn't bad either Partial to the beaches in that area, they seem cleaner/nicer and less crowded.

We live on less than 30K and money is just enough to pay all bills, mortgage at $720 and credit card payments. Assuming we have no extras, no cable, only one cell phone and internet, we manage to budget having two kids. So definitely, 30K is plenty for one person but it also depends on how much you spend. If you go to restaurants a lot, I can see this money go quickly, but then again, we don't go to restaurants (I am not an expert on prices there), movie theatres and such so we live very economically.

It could be a retired person, if you have no mortgage, no car payment or loans....I would think it could be done....

It most definitely can be done. In Boston it would be extremely to almost impossible, but in Phoenix it is very possible. You do it by not eating out all the time, nor do you take on big bills in your life. So it can be done.

For a single person $37,000 a year shouldn't be a problem.

Married with a child? No.

A family of four can easily make it on $65,000-70,000 in the Phx metro.
