Default Question about an area of Glendale

Does anyone know anything about this particular area of Glendale?

W Northern Ave & N 51st Ave in Glendale

We are looking at homes, but are not currently in the area. Not sure if this area is worth investigating.

Thanks.

not that cheap and kind of ghetto. An example of some newer areas that should be avoided, even though they look modern. Maryvale would be somewhat worse.

I'm glad I asked! That's what I was thinking. Definitely want to avoid the ghetto area of Glendale.

Ah, throwing around the word ghetto again. The use of the word ghetto talking about anywhere in Glendale is really not accurate, but the way that word is thrown around now has nothing whatsoever to do with what a real ghetto is like. No, it's not the best area. Go further north, and further west.

Perhaps I should have said that I want to avoid the not so nice parts of any town.

Somewhat would be an understatement.
And lets be honest, not sensitive.....
Without regard to race, Maryvale is ghetto
according to wikipedia

A ghetto is a section of a city predominantly occupied by a group who live there, especially because of social, economic, or legal issues. From a statistical perspective, ghettos are typically high crime areas relative to other parts of the city.

I don't swear by Wikipedia as an end source for such information. I see "A ghetto" as more than that. It has nothing to do with "sensitivity". Perhaps it's the throwaway use of "ghetto" as an adjective, not a noun. As a noun, it's been historically used to describe places that look nothing like Maryvale, and are WAY more segregated than Maryvale is. Perhaps it's a function of age, and just not being "hip" enough.

Yes. Segregation, joblessness, hopelessness, abandoned and burned out buildings, broken glass and busted down cars on the streets, few retailers, gang bangers on the corner and derelicts in the gutter. That is not a description of Maryvale. Maryvale is a lower working class neighborhood with a lot of first generation Hispanics most of whom hold jobs and take reasonably good care of their properties. It has many of the same shopping choices as any part of the city and few of them are protected by window bars. Anyone who knew anything about it would not call it a real ghetto. Anyway, Maryvale is Phoenix not Glendale.

Very well-written.

Maryvale certainly isn't a nice area but it's not a ghetto.

If anyone wants to see some real ghettos, Detroit has its share to choose from.

back to the OP. I own a TH at 21st Ave., and Northern, which isn't the best, but it is super convenient. Northern deteriorates as you go west. I had declared last Fall, that I would never go west of I-17, after working at a hideous charter school over there. I gave them one more chance, and I'm glad I did, and I will be back in the Fall (43rd Ave.). However, living over there would be an entirely different matter. There is a pervasive welfare mentality over there, that can really be downright discouraging. Kids drop out, girls get pregnant, boys go to jail, lather, rinse, repeat....
