Stars at night? You must not have been living in Phoenix. With all the light pollution here, I can see diddly squat at night. It's a shame because I've seen how the stars are at night in the middle of the desert-- I've been on Kitt Peak-- and it's amazing. Phoenix totally ruins it-- it's a scandal, really. Tucson, on the other hand, has light pollution ordinances so they use those quirky yellow lights which help preserve the stars at night there.

Hi vegaspilgrim,

I'm sorry you cannot see the stars at night in Phoenix. Now I understand it's not just our friends who live closer into the central part of the city who say that too.

We thought it was strange that they can't see the stars where they live. One of the first times they came to visit us here in Vistancia (northern part of Peoria), they stayed past dark and commented how wonderful it was to actually see the stars here. That comment surprised us because we're used to being able to see the stars and we thought everyone could no matter where they lived. Like you, they thought that the reason why they couldn't see the stars very well where they live is because of the street lights there, but we have street lights here too. Maybe there are more streets lights the closer it is to central Phoenix?

I agree with you; it is wonderful being outside at night and enjoying the amazing stars. We like that there are no mosquitos either.

I found the "relentless sun" post so funny. How great to be able to make plans for future outdoor parties and events and not worry about everything being ruined by the weather. You can be 99% sure of what tomorrow or next week or next month will be like. In the midwest-it's a crapshoot!

I agree. I don't get why people actually like cooler weather where you need a jacket and stuff but then I'm sure people don't get why I can tolorate 90 degree weather so I don't ever question someone's opinions on weather. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. It does make me wonder though why some people will be in jackets when it's like 65-70 out even with no wind to make it feel colder. Isn't that supposed to be like as good as it gets

For some - maybe it is as good as it gets. I am one of those people who is absolutely freezing at 65-70 and will wear a turtleneck or a jacket at 65-70 degrees. In Payson last late Spring, when it was 80 - I thought it was shivering chilly and had to buy a sweatshirt to wear up at their Walmart. Below 65 - my teeth are jittering. Below 55 - don't ask. Not everyone has been raised in or subjected to subzero temps or regular cold temps - my family hasn't. I even wore a jacket this evening at 8pm when I went for my run. Was very chilly to me with the breeze.

Being comfortable....is as good as it gets.

For me,
cool weather== crisp, cool, clean, refreshing, invigorating
hot weather== sweaty, smelly, lazy, lethargic, headaches

Think about it this way, would you rather sleep at night in a warm, stuffy room with no clothes on or in a cool room snuggled under the covers? I prefer option #2 hands down. Has anybody ever seen the Seinfeld episode where Kramer says he was going to kill himself because his apartment was too hot at night and he couldn't sleep? That's how I feel here in Phoenix.

Well, 5 shots of good Tequila and you'll be able to see stars anytime, not just at night!

Do you ever feel a bit foolish for moving to PHX and constantly complaining about the heat ? It's kind of like moving to Florida and complaining about the humidity or moving to North Dakota and complaining that it's flat and cold. I'd think the fact that it was going to be hot in the desert would have been obvious.
