We go through them on the way to CA. They've never asked me for a single thing... ID, anything. We don't look like we're recent immigrants from Mexico, though.

I was asked at New Mexico. I am very pale, they didn't give me a lot of hassle but yep you can be stopped.

If you're on any road that runs anywhere near the US/Mexico border there can be checkpoints. Just like local police alcohol checkpoints that could be set up on any road, any time, Border Patrol checkpoints move constantly. You could be waved through, you could be asked for ID, you could get your car searched, or lately I've been to checks where they had a drug dog sniff the car. I've never experienced checks on the trip between Phoenix and Palm Springs or Phoenix and Las Vegas, but driving the interstate between Tucson and San Diego I go through three or sometimes four. I've also been stopped just driving within San Diego or Pima Counties. I usually get waved through, but I'm a middle-aged woman in an American car with AZ plates, small enough that no humans would fit in the trunk.

I don't think anyone can answer that question for you-- there's no way to know what will be happening on any of the affected highways at any particular time, and there's a reason for that. Good luck.
