If you tell us where you'll be going to school and where you will be working, the knowledgeable folks here may be able to assist you better.

What CheyDee said. In order to answer that question, we would need to know what school you will be attending, and what your price range is.

For example, if you're going to ASU, most everything you'll need you can find on campus or along Mill Ave. There's plenty of apartments nearby, and even on-campus student housing. There's a CVS on the SW corner of Mill and University, which'll have most of your shopping needs. ASU is connected to downtown and Central Phoenix with a single Light Rail line (currently the only Light Rail in Phoenix, however the system will hopefully be expanded in coming years). The system also indirectly services the airport, via shuttle bus from the 44th/Washington stop. Living along the Light Rail corridor, you could reasonably live car-free in Phoenix, going to either ASU Tempe campus, or ASU Downtown campus. Apartments on or around ASU, though, are fairly pricy -- expect to pay around $600 for a single room in a shared apartment if you want to be right off campus.

Tempe, if you are attending ASU or Mesa Community and downtown Phoenix if you're attending ASU downtown or Phoenix College. It all depends on where you will be located.

By the way, I heard that ASU has some deal whereby they provide free or cut-rate bus passes.

Depends on what you consider low/cut-rate... for the 11/12 academic year, the Metro passes were $150 for the academic year (9 months). We are expecting the rate to go up this year.

Compared to 3.50 a day round trip on the light rail, that's a discount. And that's assuming two trips on the bus/rail a day. Many make more than that.

It's all a matter of perspective and individual circumstances, but for some--yes, it's a good deal.

$150 for 9 months, or $55 for a 1 month pass? I think that's pretty cut-rate.

Though, a word of caution: they only sell a limited number of the semester / academic year passes, and they DO run out. If you don't get one, you'll be stuck buying monthly passes (which is still cheaper than buying day passes nearly every day).

For me, though... I only went to campus 1-2x a week for the first semester so it was hard to negotiate the price up front. But alas, I digress... to each their own.

To the o/p... what school are you going to because it really depends
