Forgive me if this has been brought up before, but a quick search revealed nothing.

We have a lot of visitors from out of state, and many of them don't seem to have the same attitude toward tipping as many of the people who live in the Phoenix area. I think it has to do with the minimum wage being lower here for service workers, which isn't always the case in other states (countries).

So, I pose this question towards Phoenix area residents: How much do you think is fair to tip (in the Phoenix Area):

Waiters/waitresses/bartenders;
Your table at a buffet whether you are served drinks or not;
Car wash personnel;
Hairdressers/barbers/nail techs;
Therapeutic massage/spa services;
Valets;
Cab Drivers;
Hotel Maids;
Skycaps/Bellcaps
Other____________.

Do you still tip if the service is terrible, or tip extra well if the server is fabulous? Do you tip the same in other areas where you know the servers are paid well already?

If you work in a service industry, what do you think is fair?

Since you don't live in Phoenix, I assume you tip that amount in Las Vegas but would tip the same amount if you lived here? And do you tip all the workers listed in the OP the fifteen percent, or???

1. 0-35%
2. 1 Dollar, unless it sucks
3. n/a
4. 25-40%, but haircuts are 2 Dollars in Mexico or 1.67 in Thailand, where I get my haircut(s).
5. 20%, but that is for a 3.50 USD 1 hour massage.
6. 1 Dollar...never 5.
7. 5-10%
8. 1 Dollar, occasionally
9. 1 Dollar, unless the line is long or they are only 13 yo to begin with.

Can we not stray off topic... no need to report what you tip in other countries. The OP is asking about tipping HERE.

I don't live in Phoenix, but I can tell you that, IMO, there is no standard number(s) that will cover all the areas you reference. How do you give a Skycap 20%?

I don't think the OP is asking for a single number that covers them all, just trying to get a feel for what tip amounts apply to those categories here in the Valley.

I tipped the same when I lived in Phoenix. When I recently was in Phoenix, my friends and I racked up a tab at the bar. We tipped 15% on it. At buffets I either tip a dollar, or nothing, it depends. As far as the others on her list, they do not apply to me. I never wash my car, I do not stay at hotels, I cut my own hair, I do not use valets, etc.
