Unless your tree has a headache or sweet tooth adding aspirin or sugar is a waste of time. A fresh cut and soaking in water is the only tried and true solution. Sugar actually accelerates the decomposing of the trnk.
Christmas trees sold around Thanksgiving time are cut up to 3 months prior and stored in refrigeration units. They dry the fastest. Get a fresh delivered cut tree within 2 weeks before xmas for the freshest and longest lasting tree, especailly in the desert areas. Trees here dry very fast in this climate and any house using their heater to keep the house warm will also dry out the tree faster with the warm non humid climate inside the house.

If you ever touch a match to a tree around January 1st, you will never buy another cut tree.

Great idea! I don't know why it didn't occur to me; we set the bedrooms up every fall with humidifiers...

I live in SoCal - it's also very dry here. I learned my lesson the hard way - growing up in the Northern Midwest, we always got our tree Thanksgiving weekend. We were afraid to use our lights (pre LED days) the last week or so before Christmas the tree was so dry. We now wait until the 2 weeks before the Holiday.

Another tip - make sure you tree shop during the day. Look for a lot where they cover the trees, they can get "sunburnt". A couple times - we shopped at night and the next day noticed our tree had a side where the needles were burnt/really dried out on the ends.

Our first year here we were surprised at how dry everyone's tree was when they took them to the curb the week after Christmas. We watched people carry them out of their house and to the curb and they were so dry they were discolored and no longer green and needles were everywhere. Never seen this while living in the Northwest.

We've decided to use a artificial tree since living here and it has worked out well.
