Are these police chases becoming more and more common? Seems like I am seeing one every few days.

"Every few days"??? You aren't watching the news, then, you are watching "Cops" on TV.

Seriously, no, they are not becoming "more common", IMO, and they happen in every major city and some not so major cities.

I am seeing at least one a week on TV. Remember the one a few months ago? I watched it live on TV where the guy got out of the car and killed himself.

Which is it, every few days? once a week? or once every few months?

That's what I'm asking. I only see the ones that they air on TV, which is probably very few. But lately, I have been seeing them on the news more frequently, which tells me that there are far more that go unreported.

The police chases of the type you are discussing are ALL picked up by the media. They go out on the police scanners, roads are blocked, helicopter gets involved. There are not any of that type that go unreported. Most police pursuits are relatively short and routine, because the driver has the sense to stop.

The two you've referenced were, as you noted, a month or two apart. Not a "few days".

Its funny you mention the helicopter- did you know they talk to / threaten suspects over the PA? I've seen the choppers flying over my house probably once a month for the past few years, and only a few months ago heard them talking over the loudspeaker. They were all like, "this is the Phoenix Police department, we have you surrounded, come out with your hands up or we'll release the DOGS and you'll get BIT"..

I was kind of mad that they were buzzing my house (the spotlight was aimed perhaps a mile away), but I was laughing so hard after they went on the PA, I could hardly keep from choking.

When did "Maxwell Smart" join the Phoenix PD? :-)

And.. Who knew he could fly a helicopter?

You'd think that if a viscous animal was about to sink it's teeth into your flesh, you'd have an inherent right to defend yourself by whatever means. Of course then you'd be charged with battery or murdering a law enforcement official (the K9).

Well, if you mean a vicious () animal, then I'd say:
  1. If the police warned the suspect to surrender first (which they always do), and
  2. the suspect refused,
  3. then the suspect has no one to blame but himself/herself.
  4. Why would the suspect have "an inherent right to defend" himself/herself???
And I agree with observer. Those wild police chases are always heavily publicized in local news, wherever they occur. Things are not going unreported.

New Horizons,

Actually you can avoid the "teeth sinking" relatively easily by surrendering to the police issuing the warning (which they are required to give by law). Until a reasonable time has passed after that warning the dog is kept on leash by the handler.
