Hi,

My wife wants to get the edges of a scrap carpet piece bound so we can use it as an area rug. Can anyone recommend a shop to do this in Chandler/Gilbert/Tempe area?

Thank you,

hikernut

I don't have a recommendation but whoever you find, make sure you put a backing on it.
Regular residential carpet has a backing made with clay. That clay is VERY abrasive and if you're putting that rug on vinyl, wood floors, carpet or even tile, it will eventually scratch the heck out of the surface below.
One other thing. If you are putting that rug on a hard surface (vinyl, wood floors or tile), make sure the backing you put on also grips a little bit. Otherwise those area rugs can slip out from under you in short order.
Just sayin'

That's interesting. I had an area rug made by a carpet store from carpet I bought from them (I'd recommend them to the OP, but they are no longer in business as far as I know). I don't know that it has a backing on it, I'll have to look. It's a large rug for in front of a sofa, and doesn't go anywhere, so the potential for scratching would be small either way. Good to know though.

Thanks for the comments, maverick. This will be laid on a tile floor, and I was wondering whether or not the carpet back could damage the tile.

I have a referral for a shop in south Phoenix, which is not that convienent for me. Hoping to find soemthing a bit closer.

Thanks,

hikernut

It's not that complicated a job, I'd just call around to some carpet stores near you and see what they say. As far as a backing, you can buy a rug pad to put under it, I've bought them online very reasonably.
