The fewer the airlines out there....the higher the fares. Read it and weep.

There's always the possibility the FTC could block the merger.

Unfortunately this is so so true. It's not as if the Phoenix area can afford to lose a major employer like this. Phoenix is the 5th or 6th largest city in the country but the entire valley only has 6 Fortune-500 companies, the least of any city its size. After the ink dries on this merger deal you'll have only 5 left. Of those companies still based there none are top-100. Phoenix's job market is shrinking instead of growing. Listening to your government leaders talk it's no huge loss. But hey- no sweat. Things in Phoenix are just peachy-keen as long as the sun shines most every day.

is right. What a bunch of hooey. Most of the jobs are in the terminal and they will not go soon. The bad part for HQ people is that they will have to leave Phoenix and live in Dallas! Better dust off those Bibles. Anyway, Phoenix is booming again. Haven't you heard? Nice try.

Passengers that used to connect in PHX, will easily be able to do it in Dallas or LAX once the hub is closed.
Hardly, there are plenty of flights from all over the wet and north part of the continent that fly directly to Phoenix on US Airways. US/American are not going to pass up that revenue because if they do someone else will jump in. You are forgetting that Phoenix is also a destination point not just a transfer point.

I agree that others would jump in if American jumps out. After all Beauvais and then Parker managed to take a Phoenix based airline from a regional carrier to the largest in the world from this location. Sky Harbor is the 10th busiest passenger airport in the US and 18th in the world. That's a pretty solid market and it clearly has been profitable.

Who knows, maybe Southwest will move its HQ here. Their execs are not going to get the good tables at Dallas area restaurants anymore with the biggest dog in the business in the same town.

If we want to lure headquarters to Arizona then we need to eliminate the state income tax. Not paying any income tax goes a long way for those who earning millions. No one likes that answer but it's the reality. Rich people create jobs and they don't like to pay taxes. If you wanna lure them here then you have to dangle a carrot. This is what they are doing in Texas and it's working.

I was hoping that PHX would retain it's hub as I am wanting to move to Prescott and hoping that I would be able to get nonstop flights to PHL and other points with out having to change planes. We did come back from PHL to PHX on Southwest in the fall nonstop. Then on to ELP. I don't like having to go to ORD , DFW, ATL, or IAH to get to PHL or Baltimore.

According to management, the Phoenix hub will remain as will the PHL hub. It sounds logical as there is virtually no overlap on US Airways and American routes. I think this merger is more about having the market power to increase fares and add on more and more fees than economies of scale. US Airways and Doug Parker were pioneers and long time proponents of the policy of nickel and diming the the traveling public to pump up profits. US Airways was not big enough to go it alone though. Now, as the worlds largest, they will set the tone. Time will tell though.

Meh, you get a deduction for your state income taxes on you federal taxes, and most of the companies in Arizona only pay the $50 minimum in corporate taxes. (Now, if that federal deduction gets taken away by Congress, then I might be more inclined to agree with you)

If state income taxes were that big of a deal, you would have seen Google, Apple, Oracle, Ebay, HP, Qualcomm, etc, etc, move their headquarters up to Washington State. Rich people go where the talent is. They go where they can get access to more capital and other resources. They go where they can grow.

Even the Arizona Chamber of Commerce isn't pushing for income tax cuts. The top of their agenda this year is improving education. 2nd is reducing health care costs for businesses. 3rd is simplifying sales taxes.
They've already publicly stated they aren't looking for anymore income tax cuts because of the big upper class state income tax cuts scheduled to take effect in 2014 and they are trying to find ways to keep more funding from getting cut from education when the Prop 100 sales tax drops off in June.
