14 seems a little young to start working. My first job was at McDonalds when I was 15. I don't think I was anywhere near ready for the responsibility of a job when I was 14, but I don't know anything about your kids. When I was 15, the work hours were restricted such that I couldn't work past 7pm and not more than 3 hours at a time. The had me working 4pm-7pm a couple nights a week plus the weekends. It was a great experience, and I will never forget taking my first paycheck to te bank: it was like $80 and I thought I was rich!

Yea my first real job was when I was about 15 1/2 at Sonic which was actually kind of fun, I have good memories and it was nice getting a paycheck so young, I felt like I had so much money.

I did work a little at where my mom worked when I was 14/15 and got paid, but I don't think I was actually on the payroll.

Good, make them work. I wonder what this world looks like say 30 years from now, a whole generation who never did any phisical work, just pushing/touching a computer screen. They probally can't pick up a can of soup... See al these overweight kids, and they are not one iota ashamed of it.

It is better to work, make an honest living, doesn't matter what you do. Filling up a trash truck or designing buildings, what ever has your interest.

My first job was ten years old with a paper-route! But of course that opportunity doesn't exist anymore for kids. I worked for McDonald's when I was 14 and it required a work-permit that had to be signed by the school counselors.
I think it's a good idea to gauge their interest first. I will give them the option and some choices. I also like volunteering as well. Perhaps a decent mix of both.
I'm in my mid-thirties and it just seems like the opportunities we had as kids don't exist anymore. I'd really like them to understand the concept of earning wages for the things you want. Unfortunately, I haven't done a great job giving them consistent opportunities to earn money at home even though they've asked.
