I'm just wondering since I'm a minority myself (Asian American) and I've spent my life in Louisiana and Maryland (which was almost all white until like the past 10 years, at least my part of the state in the suburbs of DC.) My cousins spent years in Boise, Idaho and had no problem. However we were very American, up to my conservative Republican voting and country music listening.

I'm considering settling down in Phoenix after finishing my education, and I am also fascinated by the Midwest. To me, place like Omaha, Des Moines, and Kansas City epitomize the "real America".

In Arizona, is there a difference in how you are accepted depending how you are willing to assimilate and respect American culture?

A former mayor of Mesa; Willie Wong, is of Chinese heritage. He suffered a stroke otherwise Wong would have had a good shot at the governor's mansion.

Brian Ishikawa is of an old Mesa family who have been here for about 100 years-----and, the man is a judge.

i have never seen so many different peoples of color in positions of power as i have seen here. however, i would strongly have to state that the "racism" is a smokescreen. it's more classism than anything. if you want to avoid trouble, it is better to simply spend a bit more, which means you must earn a bit more. it's also not how you assimilate, it's your values and if you share the same ones with your neighbors or your community. what do you value most? for me, i'd rather have a trader joe's and sprouts than a fry's and payday loans. but you can find a neighborhoood for either choice. just be careful as the new neighborhoods are changing...
