I've read many instances either on here, on other forums, or in the comments section of AZCentral where people complain about growth in Phoenix. About how the desert is being taken away by development, about how traffic is getting worse, about too many people, too much congestion, etc.
Usually the story goes like this..."When I moved here back about 1980, I was surrounded by beautiful desert...and look at it now, houses everywhere, it's not what it used to be." Alright...well here's my question. WHAT DO YOUT THINK THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED HERE IN 1979 SAID ABOUT YOU?!?! And the people before them...and the people before them...and the people before them?! YOU, the guy who moved to the open desert in 1980, you were the first idiot in the first place! Why is it that no one ever sees themselves as the problem...just everyone else? YOU are part of the problem, the reason why the desert is being reduced, the reason there is more traffic, the reason there is more congestion. Why is it that when these people move here, it's ok...but then it's all supposed to stop? I don't get it. Last edited by HX_Guy; 10-28-2007 at 01:12 PM. |

True! Very true.
I want to live in Phoenix but at the same time I want free, opened hills of Saguaro and sand! I bet it was nice 50 years ago. Before the urban heat island effect started keeping temperatures in the 90s at midnight. LOL. Actually I was talking to this guy I know, who was flying into Sky Harbor, to rent a car in Phoenix and drive up to Vegas. He said when he got off the plane at 10PM, it must've been 100 degrees with the monsoon humidity, and he felt like crying. LMBO ![]() |

I've always said Phoenix will never be better for you than the day you arrive. We are well past the tipping point of where growth can be good. Every newcomer diminishes the quality of life for those who are already here. Probably true of just about every booming sunbelt city though.

I've been here nearly 20 years, and I like Phoenix as much as I did when I first moved here. You won't find me complaining about population growth, because I think the growth of the Phoenix Metro Area has allowed it to become more diverse, and to support an expanded assortment of restaurants, retail, and cultural amenities. There are things here in Phoenix today that we would not have had the critical mass to support 20 years ago.
What I don't like, however, is seeing virgin desert bulldozed to become new developments miles away from any employment centers. That's bad growth, and the archaic laws governing State Trust land continue to encourage sprawlish and unplanned development. My hope is that we continue to enjoy steady population growth but that growth increasingly focuses on infill development, vertical living, and revitalization of declining neighborhoods. There was an article in the local paper here mentioning a woman who moved 6 (SIX!) days earlier and already attended some meeting against growth. Same attitude towards immigration. As long as I'm here, it should stop. And it's nothing new... it's been going on for decades and centuries... Same with housing. There have been "crying" headlines in the papers about how expensive houses are and how the average person can't afford them ever since they cost 10K. Just get used to it!![]() |
