Default Road Expansion from Phoenix to Buckeye

Does anyone know if there is a plan to increase the number of highways that go from Phoenix to Buckeye?

Someone had posted yesterday about the expected growth of Buckeye, but the roads to Buckeye are already swamped with cars.

I would think the lack of roads would be a turn off for potential home buyers there.

In addition to the widening of I-10, there is a long-range plan for SR 801, which will run parallel to I-10 a few miles to the south. I wouldn't count on seeing construction start within the next decade, however. It's quite far off in the future. Even once it's built, it won't be enough. The best case scenario is that road building keeps congestion from getting worse than it already is.

As for inadequate roads deterring home buyers, I wish that were true, but that doesn't seem to happen. Witness the traffic catastrophes in Anthem and Queen Creek. Part of the problem is that home buyers usually shop for a house on weekends, and on a weekend, a drive of 30 miles or so doesn't seem so bad. That same pleasant weekend drive becomes a nightmare during weekday rush hour. In addition, many newcomers settling in the outermost suburbs come from southern California and are already used to long commutes. These trends will probably be reversed only by dramatic petroleum price increases or shortages that make homeowners rethink the tradeoff between long commutes and large new houses. Road building is needed, but it keeps us on a treadmill rather than solving the underlying problem.

The old adage in AZ is "build it and they will come", then 20 years later they will build the roads to accomdate the traffic.

The answer is that Phoenix should follow the NY example by building mass transit AND a terrific freeway system. NY was blessed by the genius of those in the 1890s who built hundreds of miles of subway, and then again by Robert Moses, who built the companion parkways and bridges.

Intelligent design is not cheap, but typically is worth it in the long run. I for one treat time as money. My time is valuable, and I am willing to pay $$$ not to sit in traffic.

Congestion pricing on selected tollways is another option. Match this with higher speed limits for congested pricing lanes and you have a winner.

There is widening of I-10 scheduled to start soon and be done sometime in 2009. That was noted in this article on InBuckeye > Home, that had updates from all the departments.
