Bunnies are gone along with the original name, Maytag Zoo, named after the founder. His heirs wanted the name changed so it is now the Phoenix Zoo.

Here is another memory near the zoo that people will remember, Tempe Beach, a very familiar sight to everyone entering Tempe from the bridge.

I believe Bill Close had 2 prosthetic legs. Lost them in WWII-Korea??
Anyone know about this? Met him once -very short & friendly.

I heard he lost them in an accident at the railroad tracks. Don't know though.

I remember Milt's very well. There were actually two locations -- 5555 N. 7th Ave. and Jackson and 11th St.

We went to the one on 7th Ave. It had two levels, with the upstairs accessible by a large stairway near the center of the store. That's how I remember it anyway. It was a very cool department store, with an excellent toy department.

Milt's must have gone away some time in the late '60s.

Say, I think I remember a store on 7th Avenue called E. L. Rice that sold discount appliances. The place is kind of fuzzy in my memory but I remember it was a really strange construction being on two levels with an open center and number 5555 just north of Missouri sounds right. I remember buying my secretary a Kitchen Aid mixer there. This would be about 1971 or a bit later.

i remember going in there in the early to mid 70's. there was one on indian school and 40th street. that was the first place that i remember seeing "generic" brand foods. everything had yellow labels and their beer had riddles on the inside of the beer cap.

i remember knocking down an entire display of 1000 island salad dressing when it first came out and crying my eyes out. i think i though they were going to arrest me.

I think they bought out the A.J. Bayless that used to be at 32nd Street and McDowell on the SE corner. I remember how down-market and depressing it was, a perfect symbol of mid-1970s malaise.
