Ahh yes, the Roach. We too always liked that resturant. It was at 7th and Ind. sch. Great neighborhood place, with a friendly owner who would come around and say hello. Later it moved down the street on Ind. sch. on the north side of the street. A much bigger place but not quite the same. I dont think it lasted too many years after that sorry to say.

Happy 200,000th visitor to this forum. Quite an achievement!

Court house brand new in 1930 at a cost of $1 million. Note the little 'bump' in the street, that was to 'protect' people standing in the street waiting for the trolley.

How do you remember Phoenix? Stories from long time residents...-phx-court-house-1929-1931-1

I love the old Phoenix and the new Phoenix, but this sure is a very different city than it was when I was kid. In spite of the changes and problems I cant think of any other city that comes close to the PHX.

La cucaracha. Great Mexican food. I found out what made the hot sauce so good. While pouring it out for chips, a cigarette butt came out of the little pitcher. Hmmm. I didn't go back for awhile because I left town for Viet Nam. When I returned home, no cucaracha!

The Mexico Cafe on 17th Street and Van Buren was my dad's favorite. They had big sombreros on the wall and cement booths with stucco that was like thick cake icing painted horrid colors, yellow, purple, red, blue and green; all strong pigments. My favorite was enchiladas and Coke, it make my mouth fizzle.

Best Mexican food in Phoenix will always be the old Macayos on Central, and Jordans on 7th Street. Best steaks, Monte's La Casa Vieja in Tempe, or the old Beefeaters on Camelback, or Navarre's that used to be in Uptown Plaze (which used to have a soda fountain drug store in the cormer. Best deli for corned beef, Miracle Mile in Park Central or Christown, or Cheese N' Stuff off Central. Best burger, Bob's Big Boy on Thomas and Central (no more). Best Italian, Red Devil. Best Chinese, Sesame Inn on Camelback and China Doll.

I wanted to go to that Jordan's. I always liked to look at the one on Central Ave. and now it's gone. I've had friends that have sworn by that for decades. I live close to La Pinata. I've always thought the food was good but kinda pricey. My Mother always want us to take her to Manuel's at 32nd. and Indian School. She liked Ricardo's, too. I'm leary of any restaurant that isn't busy and turning over the food.

I had many a meal at this place too, never found a cigarette butt though. I think my favorite place in my youth was La Palma on East McDowell, can't seem to find Mexican food like these two places anymore.

Does anyone recall a popular mexican food place called "Hacienda Corral" that was north of Thomas on the west side of Scottsdale road? It was torn down in the 80's I believe when they were messing around with the roads in that central Scottsdale area. I believe it was from the old Los Olivos family in Scottsdale and was actually their old family home. It looked like a converted ranch style home. Seems most people here are westie's who know central and west Phoenix better than the east side. Nothing wrong with that. There was an old gas/service station on the sw corner of Thomas & Scottsdale Rd. and I think it was called Avery's if I recall correctly. Would be nice to dig up a picture of it. I believe it also went under the wrecking ball in the 80's.

I have a few photos of old Scottsdale, I think they came from Life magazine. I don't know where the train was; maybe someone older than me recalls:
