The old Der Weinerschitzel building still stands on Bethany just east of I-17.
Its some other lame business now - cant remember, probably a Chex Cashed or some other equally crucial establishment that we cant live without today.

I just drove through my old neighborhood last weekend near 43rd - 35th Ave's at Bethany. Very little is the same but a few buildings still remain.

The Firestone auto shop is the only thing left from West Plaza Shopping Center at 35th. Across the street is the "Rendezvous" bar (now a stereo shop) - the Gym & Swim (now a lighting fixture shop) the old Cow Palace drive in dairy store (now a business machines center) the Hardees/Sandys is a Whataburger (which are closing several locations in the valley now - the one at 7 street & Glendale is a Filibertos now -oh joy!).

Some of the stores at West Plaza included Gordons Hobby Lobby (Xanadu for a young boy in the early 1960's) -Long Hair Inc. ( alterative for kids who had long hair and didnt want to risk getting in the chair of an old school ex-marine type barber)- Tom Tates Smorgy Table - L.L. Smith hardware (which stocked everything needed to repair a HallCraft Home) TG & Y (with a P.O. inside) - AJ Bayless (anchor store) - Rexall Drugs (with a honest to goodness real soda fountain) Paddock Pool supply - Valley National Bank (detached in the parking lot, like the Firestone shop). Across the street there used to be a Jack in the Box too-they sold hot dogs back then.!

The local Fire Station was behind it on Rose Lane at 33rd Ave. We would go there to get serial numbers stamped into the frames of our Stingrays for identification in case of theft. It was free and you got to go inside the station and get up close to the trucks. Cool man.

Default Flumes

It was an elevated flume with a rounded bottom and flat covered roof about 5 feet high inside; it ran about 2 miles with irrigation water shooting through it. There were beams on the roof you could hit your head on if not careful. Covers were ripped off at various places and kids would climb in for the ride of a lifetime. I do not know where the water originated from or why it was elevated, possibly water was pumped and elevated so it would reach more farm land.

It was in the Agua Fria river bed down south or west of Peoria I do believe. I know it wasn't the one towards Lake Pleasant. The reason the flumes there were elevated is because of it crossing the river. It's been a very long time, but I know you were going so fast in the water that you stood straight up and your feet wouldn't touch the bottom of the flume. When you were ready to get out, simply reach above your head and grab a steel beam and pull yourself up. I can remember climbing up at one spot to find I was about 30 feet off the ground. Had to drop back in and go further down to another spot! Now that I look back, it was really stupid! Especially since I couldn't swim.
My memory of the FLUMES.

I agree with the description of it that roosevelt & billyincaneyville gave.

Back in the early 60s I went there several times.

But it was just south of Indian School Road & Aqua Fria river bed.

I used historicaerials.com to verify it was still there in 1970, but gone in 1990. Search: 33.487187,-112.315636

There was a barbed wire fence that was suppose to keep people out of the area, but someone had torn down part of the fence so that you could drive up to it.

There were rumors about barbed wire inside the flumes to keep people from using it, but we had never ran across any. I think they put up a new fence so we stopped going out there.

It was a blast.

As far as a location south of Lake Pleasant, I went out there once.
We referred to it as "the slide" as it was a part of the canal that went downhill. No cover, just fast moving water.

Kept us awake on many long drives in the SW.
Remember H.G. Listiak? The man had a way with words! I first heard him on KOY in the early 70's when he has doing sports. After a particularly bad performance by the Suns, he said "they were having a tougher time than toothless tiger with a taffy turkey" and "they looked as graceful as a one-legged pirate skating under a grease rack". I rarely missed his commentaries after that.

I surely do. For HG fans, (and Stu Evans fans): H.G. Listiak Memorial 5/1/2004 - Words by Stu Evans

If you google H.G. Listiak, you'll find more stuff.

You're right, I've actually seen the one in Tempe... I think the stores just look so different than the old style ones... that will be my excuse, anyway!

The one I remember the most was owned by a friend of mine about 36th Street and Thomas that was made into the first Tokyo Express back in the 70's? The drive thru was closed in for a little dining area, all the other seating was outdoors with swamp coolers, and heaters for the winter.

A little advertisement from the February 1962 "Sales Target", an awards publication from the Phoenix Sales Executives. Notice how potato chips are "so good for you". Not too many dieticians would agree today, but I remember that Clover Club chips were just plain better than Lays or Charles Chips.

I never did like Blakely's dinner ware, only the glasses, pitcher and the branding iron wooden carrier.
