The Village Drive-In at 3000 North Central, directly across from where Bob's Big Boy went in, 1954. Maybe Bob's put them out of business, the Village was built during the 40's.Sorry for photos, in a hurry.Click image for larger version

I think this was previously mentioned, but I always enjoyed it when my parents would take the family to Hansa House (sp?) at 7th Ave & Indian School Rd. I could load up on meats, potatoes and pasta without putting any veggies on my plate!

Well, this warrants a peek at part of the Village Drive In menu 1950's. Remember, there were still cheaper places to eat at the time. I remember 5 cent coffee and 15 cent milkshakes filled to the top of the tin.

Amen to that! Once a week when I was a kid, as a treat, we used to hit Bill's Hamburgers in Mesa and get a bag with 6 burgers for $1. Hard to find places anymore that still grill the patty and onions together. It's a totally different and wonderful taste.

I noticed on the Village Drive In menu that they offered a Liverwurst on Rye sandwich. If you put that on a menu today, you'd freak out every kid under the age of 50 and probably get a visit from the food police.

My mom bought liverwurst all the time, I liked it on a sandwich but never knew what it was; later I found out it was ground up liver. Mom also like to buy tongue, I would eat the very tip but that was it, the rest was gross. Back about 1950 the big deal was frozen minute steaks, little thin things but they tasted good. I used to spend some time breaking the red coloring in a capsule and squishing it all through the white margarine, seems the dairy industry was responsible for that so people would not buy it. The margarine was white just like lard and came in a plastic sack. Before that it was packaged differently and you put it in a bowl and then colored it with some red powder. Spam was also in the menu a lot, fried to make a sandwich with mustard.

Here us a menu only someone who is in their 80s would remember. Restaurant was on Central just south of Van Buren. Sorry for sideways.............

What ever happened to, or does anyone remember, Gibby's Broasted Chicken on Scottsdale Road between Thomas and Earll? Near Avanti on the west side of the street. Great chicken and ribs.
