Depressing.
Nothing and I mean NOTHING is the same.

The Broadway is now a Super WalMart. Oh joy.
Remember how when you went through the main entrance and there was
JC Penny right in your face with the huge display windows etc.?
Now its the "food court" for Costco. A sea of garish red metal tables bolted to the floor and huge posters of hot dogs and other crap. Its disgusting.

I'll post some images soon.
In the meantime, here's one sure to make you cry.
I remember Christown when it was first built...some fun shops in that mall.
Wards at one end, Broadway at the other, and Diamonds down the mall.
Was it Newberrys or Woolworths near Wards?.... I had moved to Flagstaff in 55 and came down to Phoenix to shop. Always went to Christown because I knew that I could find something in one of those shops. Flagstaff shopping was rather shopping-challenged.

The red barn was the Red Dog Saloon?
Between the Russ Lyon building and the saloon was a lumberyard owned by the O'Malleys.
The Red Dog Saloon was on Scottsdale Rd next door to the Kachina theater.

I think the Red Dog is now the Saddle Ranch steak house and bar, part of a chain.....

thanks for the reminder of where exactly the Kachina was....what a mess that Galleria turned out to be....I guess it sounded good at the time in the high-flying late 80s before the S and L failures.....

Yes it was. Although I dont remember Diamonds at CT.
JC Penny/Wards and Korricks (which became The Broadway in 1966) were the 3 original anchor stores. Now they are WalMart /Costco and Target. blech!!!
Woolworth was right next to Wards on the south end. Walgreens was across from Pennys and Korricks dominated the east end...
oh heck -heres an original floorplan from 1961.

Im pretty sure every stitch of clothing I wore from about 1964 until 1973 was purchased at CT. Dont bother now unless you only want sneakers and baby clothes.

The Arabian Horse Show was never held at the present site of Fashion Square. I wish it had been, it would have been a short trip from my house! (They used to grow grapes on a large portion of that land, before the shopping center was built) The first one was at the Biltmore hotel arena in 1955 (there used to be stables there) and it moved to Paradise Park on the McCormick Ranch property, where it stayed until Mrs. McCormick died and the ranch was sold for development. It then moved to the "new" Paradise Park location on Bell Road at about 62nd St (also less well known as "Tatum Farms" for many years), and then to WestWorld, which opened in 1981.

Even this link, from the AHAA, is not entirely accurate, as it leaves out the Bell Road years, which lasted at least a decade.http://www.scottsdaleshow.com/scotts...how/index.html

As a kid in the 60s I remember seeing the lines to get in to the Kachina. They stretched all the way around on the south side to the east side of the building. Movies stayed there (like the Cine' Capri) for a lot longer than the two weeks at the average multiplex these days... M*A*S*H was there for a few months, it seemed.

It was a sad day when it closed in the late 80s. At least there was SOME use for the Galleria, it was used as a location for the B-movie "Tank Girl" in the mid-nineties.

I thought it was Newberry's but now I realize I was thinking about Park Central, that Newberry's had a stairway going down to the basement area just like the original on Washington Street, I still remember the woman who played sheet music you might want to buy on her piano at the bottom of the stairs.

Wasn't Sambo's across the Street? Stetson Drive, it curved from Scottsdale Road to 5th Ave. where Trader Vic's was; I used to go in and order coffee at Trader Vic's just to get the rock sugar swizzle stick, and all the free sweet crackers. It is a wonder they never threw me out. There was a beautiful two story Spanish building next to Trader Vic's going north; I was offered the place for $50,000 but thought that was way too much money.
