It was owned by Jimmy Ganem, and later run by his son of the same name. Our favorite waitress was Patty, who eventually retired and moved to Pinetop.

They had great food and the best hot sauce in town, and their cheese crisps were unequaled. The elder Jimmy was a fixture at the cash register by the front door, usually solemn but always quick to strike up a conversation with.

After losing the building on McDowell to make room for the parkway, they started a couple of new La Palmas farther north. They had a location near 7th Street and Hatcher, but it closed just a few years after opening. They had another spot on 43rd Avenue just north of Bethany Home that continued to operate for many years but was eventually torn down and replaced with an auto-parts store.
We used to go to the one at 43rd & Bethany Home. Didn't know about the others. Too bad. I really liked their food.

Here is the Flame restaurant's Jungle Bar. Broke a lot of health codes, there was a monkey in that dark area. It used to be the Grand Cafe.

Default West of Hotel San Carlos.

Roosevelt.

Can you tell us what this building was? Under construction at the time.
West of Hotel San Carlos.

Im going through all of my images and cannot ID this building at all.

44 Monroe stands there now.

This shot is from the famous opening sequence of Psycho.
Production of the film began on November 11, 1959 and ended on February 1, 1960 –so whatever it is was being built then.

Thanx

Wille

That is the Arizona Bank Building. They had a huge vault in the basement for safe deposit and large items like paintings.

It was filled with about 70 offices, mostly attorneys.

Incredible collection of photos. The car in the olds picture is exactly like my first one (1970 Delta 88 I believe), havent thought about it in decades.

Whats more impressive is how you can access and how well things are labeled.

Note the 14" (or maybe 15"?) Rally Wheels with trim rings (had a similar set on my first car, 71 Camaro)

The good old days when you could actually work on a car.

This blog is always good for old timers trying to locate buildings downtown. This 1940's aerial has an unusual angle but all of downtown is there.

That oblique 45 aerial shows something that makes Phoenix easier to navigate (IMO) in than many other cities (anyone ever been to downtown Boston?) and that is its simple grid system. It made being a delivery driver quite easy, especially east-west. North-south required some memorization and wasn't so simple, especially with the Camelback and Indian School curves between 44th and 68th.
