Does anyone remember the painting of the two cowboys that were roping the devil that used to hang in the entrance to Beefeater’s restaurantin Phoenix. Back in the late 60s and early 70s, my family would often come upto Phoenix from Ajo, and we generally would eat at Beefeater’s. Man, thatpainting used to freak my sister and I out!

Holy Smokes, I do! That used to freak me out too!
I haven't thought about that in about 40 years until you wrote that. Weird to think that memory was rattling around up in my brain-attic, waiting for someone to mention it...
Apparently, it was based on a song. Here is a thread devoted to it:

I think this is the painting as well, by George Phippen. You can see the original in the Phippen museum. (It was even commissioned by Sam Steiger!) "George Phippen’s oil painting is named after Gail Gardner’s famous cowboy song, “Tying a Knot in the Devil’s Tail.” The painting was commissioned by Gardner’s son-in-law Sam Steiger as a surprise Christmas gift."

I was in touch with a lady that has looked into it, and she said this painting is not the one that hung in Beefeater's, but it is by the same artist. According to her, the family that owned Beefeater's still owns the painting, but will not show it, nor allow photos to be taken of it. Even though it has been 30+ years since I last saw it, it was pretty engraved upon my brain, and I am pretty sure she is right; this is not the same one.

So, the Curator of the Phippen museum in Prescott confirmed that the Newton family (owners of Beefeaters) still own the painting, but will not show it, nor allow it to be photographed. She was kid enough to send me a picture of a magazine cover that the painting, "When The Devil Meets His Match" was on.

Are you able to post it? My memory of the painting was that the devil was a bit more in the foreground and looked really angry and scary. Glad to know this wasn't like the famous "Thunderbird" photo in the Tombstone Epitaph that everyone can remember seeing but no one can actually find.
What magazine was it on? I'd like to try to find a copy.

I've only lived here since 2001, but I can tell you the suburbs have grown greatly. When I first moved here, I lived with my aunt near downtown Gilbert. On Gilbert Rd, the road crunched down to a two lanes (one/direction) at Warner, and Gilbert&Ray was a 4 way stop. Most roads south of Elliot were 2 laners with 4 way stops. Anthem and Maricopa essentially didn't exist. And on I-10 heading west of town, the limit was 75 starting at Litchfield Rd.
