Scottsdale for a brief time had a building code that all new buildings had to look western, at least in he downtown area.
Here is similar view looking south. I guess this photo is about 1958. Some expensive cars parked at Basha's, this is Scottsdale all right.

actually, roosevelt, that's gotta be looking NW because of Camelback in the view, right??

that's Scotts. Rd going across the view L to R, but I don't know if that's 1st Ave (one block S of Ind. Sch.) or Ind. Sch. in the foreground....Basha's would have to be way across Scotts. Rd in this view......this seems older than the Hobo Joe's picture????.....

going to print this one up, too.....thanks

In a similar vein, went to later grade school with the son of the owner of Hobo Joe's. Great family.
yep, you are right Indian School, not Thomas. i'll have to get over to my parents house and do a little digging to see if can find the news paper pic and scan it in and post it up.

i keep trying to get in to talk to the Scottsdale historical museum and see if they have any pics of it, but it seems to be prepetually closed every time i go there.

You are right. This view was taken from the little courtyard of the Valley National Bank. Yes, this is older. The Ranch House hamburger place was on Indian School along with Humble Gas. Did you notice that little wooden stairway by the palm tree?

Yes, Hobo Joe's was in the same location as the Goldwaters store that predated Fashion Square. Yes, the Pink Pony closed recently. But, the Sugar Bowl is still there......

Ranch House burgers. Yum. It was still there when I was in high school in the 70's.

Great pictures, Roosevelt. They actually make me a little misty. That's part of my childhood brought back in pictures. Thank you so much!

Thanks so much for the pictures, My mother was placed in the school in 1932, at that time it included pregnant girls, It truly was the best thing that ever happened to my Mom. I would love to have more history on the School. the nuns moved to St. Louis in the 80's.

Interesting to note that they existed on $4 per day for each girl in the late 1950's: counselors, teachers, doctors, food, clothing and maintenance of the entire complex (most of which was torn down for the shopping center.) The church was upstairs in the existing building over the beauty shop. The upstairs was never rented out probably because it would require an elevator.

I would love to have a complete history of the School. thx for you info

Boy, does that ice cream look good! Does that mom have deep pockets or what? They all look so happy and judging from whats on that table, the tab would come to 50 bucks, easy. I hate having to be practical. Guess I'll make myself feel better by going out to the kitchen and fixing myself a black cow with diet root beer and reduced calorie ice cream. Oh well!
