Some of you seem to be fascinated by the Christmas tree lot on 24th and Camelback. Here is an aerial photo I have of the area, not too sharp. At the bottom edge you can see Caf' Casino and Cine Capri plus that smaller building that might have been a savings and loan. Way up on top at 32nd Street you can see the corner lot that had the citrus trees and mansion. The trees are dead so about to be developed. Across the street is the strip center with Mancusos and Guggy's.

Whatever happened to Guggy's? Used to go to the one in Fashion Square when my mom worked at Sakowitz. The smell of any good coffee shop always takes me back to Guggy's...

I miss Guggy's, too, we lived not far from Fashion Square when I was a kid, and went to that location a lot. It was sort of the quintessential "coffee shop" of the 50's and 60's.

I was born in Ajo (1951), my mom was born in Phoenix, (1926), and her favorite memory is taking the trolly to to salt and then taking the ferry across to Tempe to go to the movies

Actually Paul Shank's Safari coffee shop was my favorite, I would get pancakes and my son that huge pecan roll. Lot's of hookers in there at late night though.

To this day I have yet to see ANY Star Wars movie.
Do you remember what year Tommy was there? I remember seeing the Godfather at the Cine Capri and it had been there 6 mos by then.

I liked Paul Shank's, too. It was a fun place to go at 2 am weekend nights when I was in high school. I remember the ladies in the coffee shop and business men courting them. Love for sale.

HERE is a fabulous site with pictures of the original Safari Hotel, it screams 1950's. By the way, there is a photo showing a group of models around a guy with what looks like a rubber bladder air jack for cars and trucks. I think the Safari opened in 1956.

The Guggy's at 32nd Street and Camelback may have been the last one built. It had the strangest color scheme, hot pink and orange, trimmed with dark wood.

The only reason I'm posting this familiar picture is to give some historical info not many know about. Of course the high rise is designed after an IBM punch card (not visible, on other side of building) and there was supposed to be another matching building built facing it but money ran out, which is how we come to the next tidbit: Those odd curved V's circling the two round buildings were designed to hold stained glass windows. No money left so they installed brass frames behind and put in glass instead.
