One of the TB sanitorums was Desert Mission. I think it was about 303 E. Eva St just above Dunlap. It later became a City of Phoenix branch library and retained the Desert Mission Name. Everytime I went there I always thought about the poor souls who suffered and probably died there. No wonder the old wooden floors creaked all the time. A new branch replaced it at a different location and by then the City had started naming every branch after some desert plant or cactus.

The pictures do not look a lot like the old Desert Mission but perhaps one of them is. There was no need for sleeping porches at a library.

I was curious, anybody know if Cloud Nine ever really had a pool? Or are people just confusing it with the old North Mountain Hospital nearby?

It's one of the larger ones, for sure. Another "Phoenix Point of Pride" as far as I'm concerned. A lot of really good information here... and a wide range of memories!

I don't know. Don't see where they could have put a pool.

Yea, I wouldn't think so either, but I've heard at least two people say it did.

Just curious if anybody knows anything about a racetrack that used to be at the southeast corner of Elliot and I-10, where the Tempe Auto Mall is now. I've seen it on topo maps, etc. but there is absolutely no evidence of it now. Also, I heard that right near there also on Elliot was an old landing strip (near where the Walmart is now?).

The race track shows up well on Historic Aerials, 1978 looks like its heyday. Looks a bit like a test track, but not the U-Haul track nearby. There was an airfield on the sectional charts nearby, Sanders Airport, and the old aerials show a rather well-used north-south strip immediately east of Priest. See a previous post. I also remember a strip on the charts in the 70s called Kyrene, but it may have been renamed as Brenteson.

There is yet another resource with a wealth of old aeronautical charts at this site.

yes, a look at historicaerials.com shows that some sort of track appeared there after 1970 and lasted into the late 1980s....by 1993, the automall was starting....I don't know what the track was built for....

and, also according to historicaerials.com, a rough-looking N-S airstrip existed before 1957 immediately E of Priest and just N of Elliot (now partly known as Avenida Del Yaqui)....it seems to have been there until after 1978, but was gone by 1993....it may've been for crop dusting in the area, maybe....the plane parking area was a half-mile N of Elliot on the E side of what is now Avenida Del Yaqui and now still appears vacant....is that a Walmart on the NE corner of Priest and Elliot I see in the current picture?....

be careful!!!....historicaerials is addictive!!!!
