Default Old Casa Del Sol Apartment

Thanks for this thread which brings back some memories.

I visited Phoenix in 1984 for 2 months and stayed at Casa Del Sol apartment. I managed to download some of its pictures from the Internet few years ago. But I was not sure if it was the same apartment as some documents showed that it was built in 1985 (one year after I visited).

The address given was 6805 North 27th Avenue Phoenix, Arizona 85017. 27th Ave. & Glendale Ave. I could only remember seeing hot air balloons when we drove a few km north, in the morning. When we drove back from office around E Cactus Road, we had good view of the sunset when we travelled between 2 hilltops.

Does anyone know if this was the only Casa Del Sol in that area in the 80s. Thanks.

Hotashell, were you trying to find Sombrero Playhouse NOW?... It has been gone a long time, as the thread posts report, but it was located at 4747 N. 7th Street (south of Camelback) near the Islands ...you can look back at the posts for those photos.

You can get some good historical aerial shots on the Maricopa County GIS site for free. I love this site because you can choose aerial photos and zoom in on a particular site from two different years (like, say, 1979 and 2014) and display them both at the same time, overlaid. You can then "wipe" back and forth between the two to see what was there then and what is there now. You can even save the image you want as a jpg. Good use of my tax dollars, great site! It's interesting to see what happened to old Phoenix landmarks like drive-ins and Legend City over the years. Occasionally, you even find odd little bits of an old site (like a pond) that still remain. Great for history researchers.

Here is an example of the monthly calendars the Sombrero issued when it was a classic film revival house (this one from January/February 1977). This was pretty much my education in film - there was a new double bill every couple of nights, and you could see wonderful films the way they were meant to be seen - projected in 35mm on a big picture screen, not on a TV.

They have a bunch of them: Programs from the Sombrero Playhouse

This site has a couple more of the Sombrero's film calendars, looks like it's run by some Sombrero alumni:

You are not going to find it now, or without looking a bit more on that historical site, if they have any shots of the area. The building has been gone for YEARS- I think it was gone not long after the theater closed, which as noted above, was 1981. I was an usher there, briefly, during the period when they did live theater there. I'm thinking about 1974 or so.

Some unusual Coca-Cola bottles from my collection. Straight sides, non-script Coca Cola from Phoenix. One is from an estate and one was dug from an old privy during the construction of the original Phoenix Convention Center in downtown phoenix.
