Mr. Lucky's, the King of Clubs, fun place. As a student at ASU I preferred the grittier Hammerheads, O'Tooles' and of course everyone's favorite, Minder Binders. A matter of economics. It was hard to walk away from $1 pitchers and "Burger Madness".

Directly in front, no. There was a Long John Silver's at the corner of Indian School, just south of it.

There was(I think still is) a funeral home at the northwest corner of 40th St & Indian School, but I don't recall such a bar/club in that vicinity in the past 20 years at least.

I remember Toad having a very comforting voice and easy going style. There are a few videos of him hosting a show called "Backstage" on Youtube. Also they say the late Toad Hall, so I guess he's passed on. Back in the '80's or early '90's I was watching the Chicago station WGN, and I'm pretty sure I saw Toad doing a commercial, furniture I think it was. His real name was Gary Kinsey.

Here is the link for the City of Phoenix: TOVREA CASTLE
I have, when it was still owned by the Tovrea's. It's quite 'unique' but my favorite parts were the very top and the basement. The basement is HUGE and that's where the family held all their parties, etc.. There was a gigantic safe down there, like a bank vault, but they used it as a wine cellar. When I was a little kid we'd drive by and I was always curious about it so was glad to get to tour it when I did. I always called it the "wedding cake castle". When I was there it was in bad need of TLC and not in the greatest shape. A grandson of the Tovrea's is a friend of mine.

I was in the castle immediately after the widow died. The underground room was where her bedroom was, no AC or swamp coolers. The 4 tunnels were like breeze ways and they were filled totally with old upright pianos and boxes of cigars, gifts to her publisher husband. The upper floors were filled with black dresses. I bought one of the pianos, a highly carved Wing & Son piano. There were tons of Indian baskets but I didn't know anything about them, probably worth a lot now.

When I was small, my mom would tell me that Tovrea Castle was where they put dead people. Don't know where she got that from, but it sure creeped me out every time we passed there.

My mom told me it was a tomb. Same thing I guess. Wonder where that idea came from.

Some popular Valley residents (past and present):

Steven Spielberg's family moved to Scottsdale when he was a young boy.--I've seen most of his movies. The first was a TV show about a man who was harrassed by a diesel truck whose driver you never saw. Can't remember the name but it was very intense.

Amanda Blake was best known for her role as Miss Kitty on Gunsmoke. She was credited with starting the Arizona Animal Welfare League, which is now the oldest and largest "no-kill" animal shelter in Arizona. She lived in the Arcadia section of Phoenix with some of her beloved cats. She passed away in 1989.--Gunsmoke was a family favorite TV show.

Bob Shane, one of the original Kingston Trio members. If you know the song Scotch & Soda or Tom Dooley, you know Bob Shane. He lives in Phoenix.--Still love their music.

Buck Owens and his family migrated west from Texas during the depression and ended up in Mesa, Arizona. Not a country music fan myself but my mom and dad were and loved his music and TV Show Hee Haw.

Dolan Ellis, "The Official State Balladeer. This multitalented guitarist, singer and songwriter has...produced hundreds of ballads that tell fascinating stories of the State's history with drama and humor."--He was a family favorite.

Duane Eddy moved to Phoenix with his family when he was a teenager. He is best known for his twangy guitar and had a number of instrumental hits in the late 50's and early 60's. He was accepted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.--Still love his music.

Ice T, known for his gangsta hip-hop, most recognized for his song "Cop Killer." He is also an actor in movies and on TV. He purchased a home in Chandler, AZ in 2007.--was never into his music

Jenna Jameson, possibly the most famous porn star ever, lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.--oh well

Leslie Nielsen has starred in over fifty movies and many more TV films. He has a home in Scottsdale.--Airplane will always be my favorite. "Don't call me Shirley" sooo funny

Linda Carter, known mostly for her TV role as Wonder Woman. She was born in Phoenix and went to Arcadia High School.--Wonder Woman was a family favorite.

Marty Robbins was born in Glendale, Arizona.--A definite family favorite.

Recording star and guitar player. Nils Lofgren began his career with Neil Young's band, and later joined Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. He is still performing and touring, and lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.--used to be an E-Street Band fan, not so much these days.

Robert Mitchum had a home near Scottsdale. He was a popluar leading man in many films in the 40s, 50s and 60s, and continued to work in movies and television until the 90s. He died in 1997.--My favorite of his movies is "Night of the Hunter." sooo scary.

Stevie Nicks, a singer with Fleetwood Mac and then achieving fame as a single performer, she is a Phoenix resident.--still love her music

Waylon Jennings spent an early part of his career playing in Phoenix clubs.--still love his music

Wayne Newton grew up in Phoenix and attended high school here. Wayne Newton has recorded 157 albums, and is known to day as "Mr. Las Vegas."--watched him on Lew King Ranger's TV show
