Are there any fathers with young children here from Southern CA? (Phoenix: lease, house)

If so, would you mind sharing your experiences?
Where did you settle and why?
What should I expect when I move?
What month(s) are bad to move in?
Is there a specific area that you'd recommend?
(I make enough to be settled in Scottsdale, but from the impressions that I get, I may not want to).

I am starting a new position in October. The Studio is in the North part of Tempe (near the Papago Park).
I need advice on where I can rent a nice apt first; from where I can look for a house (in 3-4 months time, I will be bringing the family over).

My plan is to "explore," and get the lay of the land first; then I will lease/buy a home for my family to come to. My first stop is here - you guys/gals are awesome when it comes to calling it like it is, mostly!

Things that I consider important (in order of importance):

1. Privacy and Safety - Neighborhood(s) and house(s) specific.
2. Great School(s) for Gifted/Smart Children.
3. Not living in an area with lots of poisonous pests.
4. Racial Diversity (as much as it can be outside of Phoenix proper)
5. Not living in a floodplain area.
6. Areas close to where I can fly Remote-Control Airplanes and go target shooting.

Any advice will be appreciated!!
