My son recently completed the structural and pipe welding program at the Hobart Institute in Ohio. It's reportedly one of the best programs in the country and he did well and has all the relevant certifications. He previously worked in Arizona in a different field and now wants to return to Phoenix and find work as a welder. He tried contacting welding related companies and the Phoenix welders union online or by phone, but so far no one has reponded. He understands welding is the type of work you probably have to apply for in person and possibly take a welding test to prove yourself, so he is planning to re-locate to Phoenix in about a week to look for work in person.

Between college, work and welding school, he has lived on his own in five different states across the country and knows how to take care of himself and get set-up in a new city, so that's not a concern. He also has money saved up to cover his expenses until he finds work. He's hard working and smart and has done well at everything he has attempted. I brought him to Arizona since he was young on vacations and when he worked there a few years ago, he loved the outdoor lifestyle and personal freedom compared to the east coast where he grew up.

In an attempt to cut down on his job searching time, does anyone know of any job opportunities for welders in the Phoenix area or companies that he should check out when he arrives? Ideally he is looking for pipe welding related work (I believe he calls it tig and combo pipe) but is open to any kind of challenging welding work.

Thank you for any help you can offer him.

There just isn't that many opportunities in the Phoenix area for that type of work.

He should try and hook up with someone that will help him certify in high pressure pipe welding....those guys can write their own ticket.

Another huge opportunity would be with one of the nat gas pipeline companies....they are where all the fracking is going on.....Dakota's, Ohio and PA...where they are laying pipe they are hiring pipe welders.
