check out this website: Feasting in Phoenix — “When Zagat meets Sex and the City…”

there is a wide variety of restaurants here, although i feel it is lacking in a plethora of quality italian restaurants (though some do exist) and I have not yet found an authentic cuban sandwich. also, the mexican food here is of sonoran variety as opposed to tex-mex.

here are some more resources:
eG Forums -> Southwest & Western States
Southwest - Chowhound

restaurants unique to phoenix: z'tejas, house of tricks in tempe, Los Dos Molinos (though i hear they have recently opened one in NYC), and i think El Paso Barbecue. We also have a afghan restaurant that has just relocated from San Francisco (called Kebab Palace) which seems revolutionary that it is even here. there also seem to be a lot of vietnamese places that are popping up all over town.

Others are correct in saying phoenix is not a foodie destination, however it can hold its own on a certain level once you get past the over abundance of chain restaurants. Although I can not fault the entrepreneurial spirit of these restaurant owners, I sometimes wish there was more originality and creativity.

if you want cheesy (no pun intended) cowboy stuff and steak, this is somewhat of an attraction: Rawhide

If you're looking for a "cowboy" atmosphere, I highly recommend San Tan Flats. It's a lot of fun and totaly cowboy city. The food is meat and potatoes (steaks, burgers), they have a bar complete with stools made from horse saddles, an outdoor dance floor and stage with live music (country, of course), and fire pits that are always going at night. You can buy bags of marshmallows and roast them using the supplied roasting forks. It's a LOT of fun!!

I've heard they have a similar place in Awhatukee too, called Greasewood Flats, I think - something like that.

San Tan Flats is far out in the boonies - it's in Queen Creek on Hunt Hwy and maybe Combs...??? or Ellsworth?? Can't remember exactly.

Anyway, I think it'll give you the vibe you're looking for, and the food's pretty good too.

Wow, that sounds pretty neat. Tell me, any chance that Trace Adkins might be there? I love him.

Rustler's Roost is the cowboy barbecue type restaurant. They have a live bull out front of the restaurant. The food is OK, served in a casual, rustic style, but a lot of the tourists like to go there.

I used to work at a florist on Southern and McClintock but don't remember the deli. Sorry.

Pinnacle Peak Patio is the steakhouse someone mentioned. I do believe it is more of a place to take tourists.....Make sure they wear a tie and order their steak well done.

Pinnacle Peak Patio Steakhouse - Scottsdale - Phoenix - Arizona - Original Cowboy Steakhouse

There is a Morton's and a Ruth's Chris in Phoenix for expensive but heavenly steak and potatoes. I'm sure there are many more, I don't ever eat steak out in Phoenix. It is so cheap at the store I can buy high quality cuts and grill them.

Not in a cage but behind a sturdy fence near the front door. You pass the bull as you enter the restaurant.
