Yeah, I was a little mad about that.
Great! Thanks!
They are at my children's school too. I just want to be able to come home with out them there. I have seen plenty, just not where I live.

Your fear is real, and you are not alone. Many people share your fear of scorpions. That fear should not keep you from enjoying your home in this beautiful valley.

My suggestion is for you to get a company to inspect your property for scorpions and then get a monthly or quartly program going that will keep the scorpion food source eliminated. They will give you advice on ways to keep them from coming around, or staying, and possibly on how to keep from getting stung by one. The cost is minimal and they can discuss their pricing programs with you.

By doing the inspection and the periodic spraying, and following their advice, this should help keep your property free from scorpions and give you some peace of mind.

Bill
Yes, thanks, that's what I did here, and no scorpions yet. It's been 6 yrs. It would just be nice to just look at a place with out worrying about it.

A blacklight is your best friend. Before you settle on a new place, buy a portable blacklight and search hi n low for scorpions, if that will give you a piece of mind. Here is a link to thread I started in the pets forum about scorpions. I have a small video on there showing what a scorpion will look like under blacklight, if youre interested. In fact, the scorpion I show is a Hadrurus arizonensis, the largest scorpion in North America. These are common in many areas of AZ. I caught this one in my FIL's yard in north Scottsdale. Hopefully my thread will help explain things and show you that scorpions are not Hell-spawn like everyone seems to think they are.

Maybe your right steve-o. I think it's just not worth it. With all the other stuff here, education and pollution, killer bee's and scorpions are just a bonus I can do with out. I know your not a jerk, I was just thinking I would try and stay in AZ for awhile because I do like a lot of things about it but all of the neg. are going to get me down I think. I was just hoping to find out some real info and not get a take on my mental status as far as scorpion fears go, ya know. I have been drilled on here for it before, I just wanted to know if anyone was free of scorpions in the area I was considering. I know it's reputation in tales scorpion problems. I can't really afford "scorpion fear anonymous" right now on top of it. lol

Snow doesn't sting your kids. he he
I think shoveling snow would just be a better idea.
What kinds of house critters are poisonous out in your area? Is there an equivalent to the scorpion in your house you have to watch for? Just curious if anyone else deals with this kind of thing.

Well, all spiders are venomous, and we have many here in IL, but none are dangerous up by me. We do have the brown recluse and black widow in southern IL, thats about it. There are 4 species of venomous snakes here too, even some in the Chicagoland area (Sistrurus catenatus--eastern massasauga rattlesnake), but theyre ultra-rare. Ive been searching for them for years and havent even found a trace of their existance, although a dog was bit by one a little north of here last summer. Northwest Herald - Local News and Video for McHenry County, Illinois - Rare rattlesnake bites local canine

But to answer your question, we dont have anything to worry about. No killer bees, only one ultra-rare venomous snake, no scorpions, no black widows, no brown recluses, no flying cockroaches. About the only thing that is bothersome are the mosquitos which can be a pain at times.

One more thing: hardly anyone shovels anymore. Snowblowers take all the work out of it. I think I used mine a whopping total of 3 times last year. Im wishing I could use it more actually, its kinda fun. lol

I live near Gilbert and Ray and have not seen any at my home. I moved there in 2004. We had a pool and landscaping done this summer, still have not see them. Years back I had a home near McClintock and Baseline. We had loads of them. I would get guys to spary and it never helped. Finally, I bouught the 'spray stuff" and did it myself and it helped alot. The reason they were going in (from what I was told) was the 101 was being built at the time and it was driving scorpions to neighboring areas. None of us ever got stung by one, but they were certainly there.
But in my current home? I have not seen a single one...and I do know what to look for.

Our home that is being built comes with some kind of wall mounted receptacle where an extrerminator sprays something in the exterior walls every three months or so. Anyone else have that and does it work to help keep them out of your home?

funny you should post this today because I had one in my apartment last night! I was on my way to bed and my little dogs were right behind me and there it was in the hallway on the wall. I called for my b/f- "there's a scorpion!" and that was the end of the scorpion.

I live near 7th St. & Thunderbird right by the mountain preserve (North Mountain) which we like to call "Scorpion Mountain"- they are EVERYWHERE in my area. I have had 3 scorps in my home in 2 months and a 4th one was right outside our front door. I am very annoyed by them but not afraid of them since I was stung by one in my bed in September. However, I am very concerned about one of my dogs getting stung.

So if you do not want to live with the scorpions, don't move anywhere near North Mountain- 7th Street & T-Bird to 7th St. and Peoria vicinity. Also years ago I used to live near 19th Avenue and T-bird and there was a big problem with them in that area as well. The only time I did not see any was when I lived in downtown Phoenix in the historical district but there we had giant sewer roaches. I never saw a scorpion in the 4 years I lived there.
