Yes, Tucson is great for cycling! Just a little too far unfortunately, I'll be heading to SoCal quite a bit as well...

Tucson is worth a weekend trip at least once to do the Saturday Morning Shootout. One of the toughest shop rides in the country if you are up for it. Plus a ride up Mt Lemmon can't be beat if you like to climb, nothing close to either of these around the Phoenix area.

Ahwatukee is a popular area for cyclists as well. You see groups of riders all the time and there are decent bike lanes and plenty of quieter roads in the area. There are at least 4-5 bike shops within 3 miles of where I live (Cactus Bike, Landis Cyclery, Javelina Cycles, Curbside Cyclery, Performance Bicycle...).

As suggested, Tempe/Scottsdale will give you great access to popular road routes and bike lanes, including club rides. Global Bikes has group rides several times a week out of two locations, plus there are a lot of meetup road groups, as well as two very active mountain biking groups here.

There are some main "veins" that run East-West from Tempe/Scottsdale to East Mesa with bike lanes for many miles that are popular with cyclists: Brown Road, McKellips, and Guadalupe all have bike lanes, so it's possible to make up 40-70+ mile rides by heading east, then north/south (Usery Pass Road is a favorite,) then heading back. One thing to be careful about is flats though. Not only do you have the normal glass and rocks, but a lot of thorny desert plants seem to make their way onto the road too. I've never gotten so many flats! I've been using some pretty heavy-duty tires, and I'm still getting a lot of flats.

Check out the Slippery Pig bike shop - they regularly plan trips and always are generous with info. Very cool group of folks!
