I have the popups in a pool at my Las Vegas house. They were okay, but I guess I have too much vegetation around my house. I get a lot of junk in the pool and a lot of it falls to the floor. With that and the crazy wind here in Las Vegas, it just didn't work too well. I think my pool guy got tired (lazy too probably) of vacuuming and just had me install a pool vac.

So I have the popups, but with the pool vac he has to turn them off in case the vac gets stuck over one of them. I wish my house was more out in the open desert, then I wouldn't have that issue.

When they are working, they work fine. I have heard that they have better designs now but many people I know have had problems with them. There are differing opinions on them...as evidenced above...we had to replace the system in our new house as only 3 of the popups were working.

We have a 27' by 16' pool 3'-5' deep with an in-floor cleaning system (ie pop-ups) that we had installed by presidential pools back in 2010 and we are very happy how it cleans the pool. There's no area of the pool where dirt accumulates. We also have had zero problems with it. We have lots of plants around our pool and when a wind storm comes along, lots of leaves/flowers fall in and some dust of course. While we scoop up what we can, some debris sink to the bottom and the debris gets picked up nicely by the system.

I've also had experience with a 20' - 40' pool my parents had and I was the official vacuum guy and have to say I'd never install a pool without an in-floor cleaning system. The convenience and performance is real nice to have.

I've had three pools, one with in-floor cleaning and the other two with the kind that swims around on the end of a hose. The in-floor worked quite well and is what I would prefer. We had that pool built and the cleaning system came with a lifetime warranty. Seems like I had to replace a popup or two ever year and they were real expensive if you had to buy them. Of the swim around kind, the best that we found has been a Zodiac, which has no moving parts and is less hassle to keep working than the more mechanical types. Still, those parts wear out and need to be replaced too.
