That is what the guys in the hood do. You do not usually see people hanging out front in the good neighborhoods. It is illegal to drink in public where I am from. I also do not drink.

It's not the public if you're on your own property. I live in a "good neighborhood" and as previously stated, I see people working in the garage, watching their kids play and so on often and sometimes with a brewski in hand. This is hardly "hood" behavior.

If people being in the front of their houses, minding their own business makes you so uncomfortable, I'd recommend buying land out in the boonies. You definitely wouldn't feel comfortable in my "hood".

dear lord, my garage is nicer than the inside of most peoples homes, heaven forbid I enjoy a beer inside my own property and happen to say to neighbors walking by.

Not like I've got an 88 Pontiac on blocks with beers cans spewed about.....

Let me try again. Drop the garage/beer/socializiing discussion in this thread, as it is OFF TOPIC. Future posts on that topic will be deleted.

I do not need any recommendations from you. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. Observer if you delete my post please also delete Detroit's. Thank you.

Obviously, people have their own opinions and that is fine... I didn't mean to start a battle here.

******EDITED TO REMOVE MY LAST COMMENTS ON THE BEER/GARAGE TOPIC... THE REST IS RELATING TO THE TOPIC AT HAND*****

REGARDLESS - back to good ole 'Copa. Don't count it out - (oh, and there are people who in nice neighborhoods "in town" that sit in their garage too!)

Things to consider:

Pro's:
  • More house for your money
  • More of a "small town" feel (don't confuse this with the small towns from the midwest - it is still very populated)
  • Growing - as the market comes back up, more people and businesses are coming back
  • People are generally friendly (enough)
  • Approx 20 minutes to Chandler which has pretty much anything you would need if Maricopa doesn't have it (yet)
  • There are 3 casino's within 25 minutes of you if you are into that sort of thing - one right in Maricopa.
  • Maricopa has a new Entertainment multiplex that has bowling/movies/restuarants, etc. They are even playing the Super Bowl on the large outside screen with concessions and "tailgating" this weekend.
  • There are 2 grocery stores and a Walmart in town (and other smaller stores; Ace, CVS, Walgreens, etc.)
  • Your commute to Maricopa on 347 is surrounded by Indian reservation. It is desert, mountains and the occasional wild horses - in my opinion, much better than buildings.
Con's:
  • You are adding miles to your commute - depending on where you work (although, you may average about the same in "minutes" as people who live closer)
  • There is only one way in and out of Maricopa if you work in the Greater Phoenix areas - meaning, if there is an accident - you will be in gridlock
  • There is a chance you will smell cows (it is NOT as bad as some posts have mentioned but it is there at times). Also, those from the midwest - these are NOT cows that we are used to seeing. They aren't out in green pastures. They are in a dirt lot...
In general - things I learned from my relocation (items to keep in mind no matter where you relocate in the area);
1) If you want inside laundry - you need to specify this to your realtor... lol. I didn't know I had to specify this because in Indiana they are ALL inside. What you will find is some houses have laundry in the garage.
2) The water bill was a little bit of a shocker to me. For Maricopa - it is $90ish per month plus usage.
3) Property taxes where more here than Indiana - for those coming from IL, that may not be the case. Just be aware of the taxes when you are looking. (Some argue that Pinal County have higher taxes than Maricopa County - that may or may not be true - however, on my house hunt I found houses in Pinal county that both compared in property and taxes to Maricopa County but they were a cheaper asking price in Maricopa. Just be aware and factor that in)
4)It is hard to find a newer neighborhood that doesn't have an HOA - again, not saying that you can't!!! But houses I found without one were in older neighborhoods with smaller houses. It will depend what you are looking for.
5) It will be difficult for those of you who work in town and think you will come to AZ and buy a house with land... LOL. It also can be done but most of the areas I found that have some land with the houses are not ideal for a commute into Tempe. I have heard North Phoenix and Buckeye.... probably more but you have to be towards the outside of the cities.
6) If you are buying; Arizona doesn't sign and fund the same day. Meaning, if you sign for a house on Monday the soonest you will get possession would be Tuesday.
7) Oh, and unlike Indiana - you can buy beer here on Sunday (Sorry - I just couldn't resist!!!)

I am sure there is more... but that is what I can think of right now. Happy hump day!! (aka Wednesday!!)

As someone that is thinking of investing a large sum of money in the area, I think it is relevant as it goes to a lifestyle choice.
I did learn a lot about Copa, I learned just what I suspected about people involved with HOA's.
As a result, we have moved Copa to the very bottom of our search list.
This reminds me of those that do anything to get on the City Council just so they can pass rules for our own good because they know what is best for us.
Thanks to everyone, we are looking more to South Mountain, Gilbert, Mesa and Ahwatukee

Good Luck with your beer..have one for me
