I've been alternating local VW dealers when my '07 Jetta needs service. It seems every repair sets me back at least $400. The folks at Camelback VW just told me I had an oil leak and want $125 just to inspect and see what the problem is. The actual fix, I am told, would range upwards of $900 depending on what said fix is. I've been weary to take my vehicle to anywhere but a VW dealer due to past experiences and stories from other VW owners being the victim of local garages with little to no knowledge of VW.

VW owners seem to accept getting reamed by VW dealers as a reality of being a VW owner. My vehicle is driving me far into debt because of the outrageous service charges at the dealer.

Does anyone know of VW knowledgeable local mechanics?

I live downtown near Roosevelt & Central and work in Scottsdale near Raintree & 101. A location in one of these areas would be great but I am willing to drive to save money.

I'll be watching this thread. I do not want to take my Beetle to a VW Stealership.

Other shops can service VWs, its just tough to find a good one

I had an Audi that I took to a German auto repair shop on 90th St. just south of Mountain View in Scottsdale. I can't think of the name but they were great. I'll try to find it.

you can buy a *lot* of oil for $900..

I used to worry about oil leaks until I bought a Buick that dribbled out a quart of oil every day (80 miles).. I was pretty certain it would catch on fire at some point, but the leaky gasket was hard to get to & since I worked at an oil-change place, I had an unlimited supply of "slightly used" oil available.. ;-)

I drove that car for two years, dribbling & drooling oil - the guy who bought the car was ecstatic because the oil coated the bottom of the car with a protective layer of sludge that prevented it from rusting ;-)

a few years ago, I bought an old pickup that used a quart of oil every week (40 miles!).. the oil slick on my preferred parking spot at work prevented others from using that spot (no one wanted to risk getting oil on their shoes!).. - to be honest, even the president of that company didn't have a "reserved" parking spot, so in that regard, old cars can be a tool for climbing the corporate heirarchy!

there's a huge difference between a detectable "seep" leak and a valdez-class leak like Zippywagons often produce - unless you cant refill the oil as fast as it leaks out, theres no reason to lose much sleep over a leak that cant be found without "diagnosis"..

I think it was Autohaus. It may be worth a call to them. Good luck.

We just retired a 2002 New Beetle. We usually went to Virginia Auto at 7th St/Virginia. They don't specialize in VWs but we were satisfied with the service.

I took my Jetta here. They gave good service and I thought they were reasonable (in comparison to the dealers).

@observer53,

Thanks very much for removing all that nonsense from my post. I copied and pasted it, and was too tired to redo it!
