Yup, I agree too. We have a heated pool/spa and I think we've heated the pool once in 18 months here. The urge to jump in the pool just isn't there once the days cool off. The spa, we do use once in a while in the winter, especially at night. Unfortunately, ours was designed with the fire pits on the far end of the pool from the spa, so they don't get used.

I have solar, it will not bring a pool up to a comfortable swimming temperature until late March, mid April depending on the weather. A little sooner if you are using a cover.

I have an old school plaster 25,000 gallon pool. I couldn't afford solar heaters so I made my own and they work great. Combined with a good solar cover, I can get my pool into the 80's by mid March. At least the last two years. I like my pool water in the mid-80's and it takes a good 7 to 10 days to bring it up to the temp I like but I get it there.
By May, the cover and heaters are turned off until late September. The last two years, I was able to keep the water temps in the 80's well into November.

The reason I like a pool is for one reason: eye candy. It's the same reason I have stone on my fireplace, shrubs, pavers etc.

I dropped a small fortune on a pool / landscaping project in MN. It was not my choice. But it was beautiful. I swam in it maybe 15 times in 10 years. But I looked it thousands of times and admired it a hundred times a day.

We used Presidential - the pool is great, the people are great but it was not without it's challenges. Make sure you're there to keep an eye on things whichever company you go with

Sorry just saw this - I'm traveling for work so don't have the quotes, my recollection is around 33k including heater, firepit and spa. Another 6k for all the decking and landscaping.

Our pool is quite small though but PERFECT for us because it heats up really quickly having less water. The tanning ledge is a huge hit.
