Maricopa county animal care and control says last year it received 6,000 calls for service from Maryvale that's twice as many as from a similar-sized area in nearby Glendale and three times as many compared to areas in Chandler and Gilbert.

Dogs unleashed and loose on the street, a common sight in Maryvale in West Phoenix, near 35th avenue and McDowell.

"Yeah a lot of them they are out here chasing kids or going yard to yard...anywhere in groups of eight to twelve just running around," said Ray Rios a Maryvale resident.

I saw this a few days back. Funny story but I'm sure it's a great annoyance for those living in the affected area. I can't stand Chihuahuas. Each one I've known has been an annoying ankle biter with an owner that seems to think it's okay since the dog is small.

It is hard not to chuckle at the stories, but having a bunch of them nipping at your heels while trying to walk down a street would not be much fun.

There a bunch of non-lethal ways to discourage such animals from bothering you.

Pepper spray would probably be effective and they'd never bother you again.

Sad. People need to spay and neuter their animals. I guess the first step is to get people to stop kicking them out to the streets when they're 'done' with them.

Yeah ... definitely sad ....they were over-bred back when they were in fashion .... a lot of backyard breeders popped up commanding good money for chihuahua puppies and they had a hard time keeping up

Then that bottoms out and people either tire of them, have economic situations hit them and choose to stop caring for them and/or the breeders just didnt' know when to quit

That's a lot better than being approached by a large dog. When was the last time a chihuahua attacked or killed someone?

I understand it can be a nuisance, but I'd much rather encounter small, annoying dogs off leash than a large, potentially vicious dog (let alone a pack of them) off leash. Actually, I'd prefer all dogs on leash, but whaddya gonna do, people are rude and inconsiderate.

When we see a slew of Chinese restaurants open up in Maryvale then it's time to avoid #14 on the menu.
