I'm looking at accepting a job in the Glendale area and my wife and I plan to visit soon and look around some more. We've only visited Phoenix once - last month. Wish we came in the heat of summer. We like the "expansive" feel of Phoenix, although the lack of greenery bothers me a little bit.

I'm not sure what my question is - but my other choice is the Folsom, CA area with a chance to commute to work at the foothills.

Your thoughts? Thanks.

Nature boy:

I think the lack of greenery is a legitimate concern. I am a native and that is one of the reasons my husband and I would like to move to the south. I love the idea of green and the idea of having land with a house. Here the lots are pretty small and for a bigger lot you will pay a lot extra.

However, when you do come back out to check out the area I would like to recommend the neighborhood Sierra Verde. It is in Northern Glendale, zip code 85308. It is just north of the 101 between 67th and 75th avenues. My husband and I lived there for 6 years and as far as green goes I don't think you will find a better neighborhood. It has a lake and beautiful walking paths throughout the neighborhood. The whole neighborhood is grass. There are little tot lot playgrounds throughout. It is Deer Valley school district which I have heard is pretty good if that is a concern. I think a neighborhood like that may help you to miss home a little less.

You'll get used to the desert feel. Some communities, as has been mentioned, have a lot of grass. In other communities you have the option of grass or desert. In others only desert is allowed.

Thanks a lot. I'll definitely check out the N. Glendale area you mention. My wife is very happy about Phoenix and she had more time to look around while I was interviewing. It's a boon for me that she likes it, very big boon. But my own first impression was mixed. From what I know about myself I think I'll get used to it though.

You get so used to it, you don't remember what it's like not to see rocks, cactus and dried trees.

Arrowhead Ranch is nice and Arrowhead Lakes is worth checking into for housing.

For the best parts of N. Glendale focus on zips 85308 and 85310 only. The rest go more south and aren't as nice.

As was mentioned, 85310 and 85308 are your best bets. Also look at 85383, the eastern part of it, which is Peoria, but it's literally across the street from the above two...you wouldn't know you left one and crossed to another.

I agree, these are great areas.

Hey, it's the desert, if mother nature wanted greenery here she would have installed it. S,funny how everybody wants to fool mother nature these days.

I agree about these three zip codes being the best in that area to consider. We chose to live in 85383, and are so glad we're here.
