We are moving soon and I am looking for a house to rent for our family. A lot of ads say that there is a rental tax? I've never heard of something like this. I'm used to rent is $1000, so you write a check for $1000. Is that not the case in AZ?

The rental tax varies by city and is a percentage of your base rent. If the city has a 2% rental tax and your rent is $1000, you would pay $1020 per month.

It depends on who you rent from as well and in what city. I think for City of Phoenix, the property owner only has to charge rent tax if they own 3 or more rental properties.

Interesting! So the property owner pays property taxes and the renter pays a tax as well. I've never heard of anything like that. Thankfully it's nominal, but still something to consider in the total bill.

A lot of landlords, it seems, figure the tax into the rent, so the rent you are quoted includes the tax. As noted, not all landlords are required to collect/pay it, though.

Remember everyone who tells you that taxes/cost of living are less here? They come up with ways to make up the difference. This is one of them.
