I'm registering my car for the first time here and had a question. Do I need to get the emissions checked before I go to the license branch? Any other tips to streamline the process? thanks.

IS MY VEHICLE EXEMPT?
Arizona exempts most vehicles of the newest five model years from emissions testing. In 2013, most 2009 and newer model year vehicles (except reconstructed vehicles) do not require an emissions test. And, as of June 21, 2013, motorcycles are no longer required to be tested in Arizona.

Assuming your car is more than 5 years old and requires emissions testing, you just find your nearest station using the links posted above and drive there. You don't have to go into the office; just pull in the entrance to the gate, take a ticket (and keep it handy to give the tester), and pull up to the shortest line.

The tester will guide you in, take your ticket, instruct you to shut off accessories, turn off the engine, and leave the key in the car, and then he or she will direct you to the waiting booth next to your lane. They'll either scan your car electronically or hook up the tailpipe hoses and run it on the dyno (depending on the year of your vehicle), then test the gas cap, collect your money, and tell you whether you passed or failed.

If you passed, that information will already be in the MVD computers by the time you get there.

Thanks. both our cars passed so now it's time to wait in line at the mvd!

I went to one of the 3rd party places and was in and out in about 4 minutes.

The whole process was fast for me because I went to the emmissions testing place on Deer Valley and there was a registration place pretty much right next door. Took all of 30 minutes to get the test and my plates.

Thanks! I had forgotten all about the third party places. How much more do they charge? I'm cool with paying extra as long as it's a reasonable fee.

I don't know. This was the first time for me registering my car in AZ, so I don't have anything to compare to. I just know that it was cheaper to register for 2 years here than for one year in my old state!

^ AZ emissions in a nutshell there. Also, if you're into hot rodding or anything of that sort, nobody seems to care what's under the hood here. As long as it doesn't throw a CEL code and the tailpipe emissions pass the sniffer, you can go nuts... On a side note, I think I remember something about a bill to exempt +25 year old vehicles, anyone know what became of that?
