Keep this thread on the topic here. Religion is NOT the topic.

The death toll is now up to 21. MCSO: Investigation ongoing after death of 21 dogs at Gilbert boarding facility - ABC15 Arizona

This is such an awful story. It makes me question where I take my dogs. It's a well-run, well respected facility, but they do not have staff there 24 hours a day. I feel like I may need to look at alternatives.

You would think those dogs were each in a kennel for the night and could not get into trouble. Just as with children you make sure there is nothing harmful they can get at.

I have an incredibly hard time believing that the dogs, for one night, with no A/C could've caused this.

My fiance is a veterinarian and works at an animal clinic where one of the employees leaves 2 dogs in a room in the back where the temperatures are routinely 80-90 degrees. The dogs have been in this room nightly for at least 1 month and are still alive.

Unfortunately, as the person left in charge of the dogs was the son of a high-profile US Senator, I doubt very much that much, if anything will be done to criminally prosecute the owners of this establishment.

To be fair, 80-90 in the shade, with water, is hardly abuse of a dog. I have seen several on this forum say they keep their house that temp for people.

Let's not get too carried away.

90 degrees when covered in fur sounds pretty brutal to me.

They are made with fur and are designed to handle much higher temps than 80-90. It isn't abuse just because a dog is panting. There are millions of dogs that live outside around the country and experience higher temps than that.

Something else would have to be going on to consider it abuse. It got much hotter, for a longer time, to kill all these dogs.

I've had dogs that I had trimmed short for the summer. Since then, I have read that doing that makes it even hotter for the dog. Dogs and humans do not cool by the same mechanisms. In dogs, it said, the fur insulates from both heat and cold - like a house. Just as your house would heat up faster without insulation so does the dog. Anyway, I agree. There are zillions of dogs in AZ that are outside all day in the heat - 100 and greater. They survive. The answer is water and shade as you say. Something else went on in this place besides loss of AC. Maybe they did not provide water?

When kennels provide an unlimited amount of water, they have to take them out to go to the bathroom more often. So not giving them water could be a motivator with lazy kennels. Also, dogs that are not let out to go to the bathroom enough will figure that out and refuse to drink.

Oh.. Thanks for the possible tip on NOT shaving a dog. It seems others share your view and I need to explore that some more!
