Sorry to hijack the thread but I am curious...is the Phoenix area gov't doing a good job of planning ahead and building more roads for commuters or is the commuting nightmare just going to get worse and worse?

There are hwy expansions in the works right now. I just think they have a hard time keeping up with the population and we think it will just get worse. The I-10 is getting another lane, they need 2. The 303 loop will be completed around 2011. I-17 is getting another lane up in the northern section, they need at least 2 more.

Is the gov't in AZ recognizing that? Are they talking about expanding even more than what you described? That is one thing that worries me about moving there is that after 5 years it will be so crowded that I will be driving 1 1/2 hours to work each way. Especially if they don't keep the roads up with the population.

That is the reality here. It takes a long time of backed up traffic (like years) for lanes to be added. It's a definite concern, that's one reason why we tell people to move close to work when they first arrive here.

Back in the 1950s, the city planners thought that if they didn't build to accommodate for mass transit and big commutes (no subways, no freeways), then nobody would want to come here. So nothing really got built until after it was evident that we desperately needed it. The entire county has been playing "commute catch up" since about ther mid 70s.
