Just ask them if they have change from a 50 dollar bill......

The ones with a sign, will work for money, offer them some work, you wil be amazed with the excuses not to work, but as said before, just ignore them. They are always where the sun shines, how convenient....

The seem to be more prevalent around Flagstaff these days. That seems to change when the first snowstorm hits, though.

I tell you the problem in Phoenix is super mild compared to other cities. I was in San Francisco most of this week and you can't walk 10 feet without running into one. I go to SF a few times a year and the huge number of street people there is just depressing and makes me want to not go there anymore.

If ignoring them doesn't work and I'm forced to engage I say, "Sorry. I don't carry cash." If they look scornfully at my handbag I add, "There's a book in there." Which is not a lie and always shuts them right up. My friends claim my car has never been stolen because the seats are always piled with books. Perhaps ne'er do wells are allergic to the printed page.

Confronting them isn't a solution. I guess since it's a donation they don't have to report taxes either, hello benefits city, aka welfare.

Since no one cares about these concerns I should give it ago. Next stop, my local off ramp.

I agree.

I think the worst spot for beggars that I've found in the valley is on Mill Ave in Tempe. I don't know if it has gotten better/they clamped down on it within the last year or so. No where near like SF but enough of it that we don't go there anymore. Used to be kind of nice just to walk around a bit and get something to eat.

Interestingly, the only folks I could easily identify as panhandling during my recent visit was at University and Mill in Tempe. Conversely, walking the Las Vegas Strip a couple days later was ... an experience. I had thought Atlanta was bad.

Huh. That's good to hear about Mill Ave. Haven't been there in probably close to 2 years now so perhaps somethings changed.

Do you know/does anyone know if the city clamped down on panhandlers? I imagine it didn't help business.

I try to give a few bucks to sign holders now and then. I am a sucker for the homeless with dogs...I realize many of them use it for alcohol and meth but some are seriously mentally ill and sober. Often I buy a meal and give it to them and sometimes they aren't grateful but I remember it is charity for them not brownie points for me. So sad.
