Default Museum buys land for $14 mil

21-acre plot will house exhibits that feature musical instruments from around the world

The new Musical Instrument Museum has closed a $14.4 million deal to buy 21 acres at Tatum and Mayo boulevards for its new facility.

"It's been a long road," said museum Director Bill DeWalt.

The museum would focus on historical instruments from around the world. DeWalt calls it "a portal to world music."

Great concept in a ridiculous location. Why bulldoze desert to build a museum in a sprawlish location when a more appropriate location would be Downtown or nearby? In a central location, the museum could benefit from synergies with other nearby museums, as well as musical organizations like the Phoenix Symphony. It would also be equally accessible from all parts of the metro area. At Desert Ridge, it's going to be remotely situated for potential visitors in other parts of town and cut off from the rest of the arts and cultural organizations in the metro area.
