It's a very large, spread out metro area. It depends on exactly where you are headed and what time; traffic is heavier in most areas during rush periods in the morning and beginning again late afternoon. Your question is very general, really too general to answer any more than that. I don't know where you live now, but that may affect how you perceive the traffic in this area.

Would be living in Mesa in the east area one day traveling to:
Mesa to Downtown Scottsdale
another day Mesa to Tempa
3 days Mesa to Downtown Phoenix

Time of day matters as well, but depending on your starting point in Mesa, your longest trip will be into downtown Phoenix, and if you are traveling at peak times, you will encounter heavy traffic. Mesa to downtown Scottsdale may not be high traffic, Mesa to TEMPE (not Tempa) is the shortest trip, how much traffic you will see depends a bit on the time of day. You asked about mass transit in another thread; it may or may not work for you; Mesa to downtown Phoenix is the best bet for that.

In another thread that you started, you asked about public transportation in Mesa.

Surely you are not planning on using publuc transportation to get to these places, are you???.

To do what? To go to all the cities listed above, or is that what you will be doing?

Actually, Mesa to downtown Scottsdale can be quite congested, but it depends a lot on the time of day. I have been on both the 101 northbound as well as surface streets into downtown Scottsdale, and they always seemed to be backed up. Also, traffic can be congested in Old Town/downtown Scottsdale even after the main afternoon/evening rush hour because of people going there to shop, dine, etc. This is especially true on Friday nights & weekends.
