I think it shows just how paltry the regional economy is when people think Tempe is "exploding" with development. Yes, State Farm is establishing a regional headquarters in the city. However, when compared to many Sunbelt cities, this growth is to be expected. How many highrises are going up in the Houston area? Many. Austin? Many. Atlanta? Several. Los Angeles? Several. A few highrises and people are acting like Tempe is on a Dubai like trajectory. This is honestly the path Tempe should be on. It is a shame that other large Valley cities can't follow suit. However, a few midrise buildings is really nothing to do backflips over. These are just more sterile, soulless buildings that will do little, if anything for the walkability of Tempe. They will just make the city look pretty at night from the 202.

Where is USA Place? Why has that been delayed for an entire year? What about the mixed use tower near University/Mill that was supposed to bring a grocery store downtown? Where is that?

The State Farm Building is going up crazy quick. I was in Arkansas from February to July, and then Flagstaff from July to October. When I left the valley there was nothing there. Came back to see what's there now!

Tempe absolutely is exploding. Tempe is a suburb and you are comparing it to Austin, Houston, Atlanta, LA? Compare it to Irvine or Katy. The State Farm development is just some of the development going on in Tempe, including the University House High Rise and other projects at various stages, some as small as 4-stories. People that haven't been to Tempe in 18 months comment on all the new development including high rise apartments, hotels and smaller projects too. As far as the tower on Ash/University that was supposed to bring a grocery store, that stalled years ago in the recession and there are now other plans for that land. Click on the link someone left on page 1 and you will see all that is happening.

Funny how "soul-less" seems to be the new favorite word. What does a non-soulless building look like?

I think many are underestimating the size of the State Farm project. According to the PHX Biz Journal, it will be over 2 Million feet. That is 3x the size of Chase Tower downtown. If this was one giant skyscraper it would easily be over 100 stories. This is huge.

What is the footage of buildings being built in the cities you mention?

Well said and I wish I could rep you for this. Just the fact that he is comparing Tempe to Austin shows how far Tempe has progressed.

For those curious, there is a video of how the Marina Heights (State Farm) project is supposed to look when completed.
