It's very close to the Pawn shop my family owned for 27 years 1980-2007 at 27th ave and Van buren. I spent many years working at the shop when I visited Phoenix it's a terrible area. it's not a safe place to ride a bike or the bus around.

In normal working hours, it's safe, certainly on the bus. Even in the evening, a single bus ride would not be a big issue. I wouldn't want to be riding a bike around there at hight, either, but the OP hasn't been back to give us any info on his work hours.
