In Tempe, I'm quite fond of Khai Hoan on Apache Boulevard. One of my favorite dishes there is the bun rieu, a specialty soup of shrimp and ground crab meat in a broth with tomato. About a mile away, Pho Nhat is my Tempe runner-up.

I don't get down to Chandler much, so I can't comment about restaurants there; however, in nearby west Mesa, you should definitely visit Mekong Plaza, an entire mall devoted to east Asian food and shopping, mostly Vietnamese and Chinese. At that shopping center, unPhogettable is the standard pho shop, and a good one. Nevertheless, it's also worth visiting the food court to try some of the central Vietnamese specialties offered at Hue Gourmet.

Thank you both for your suggestions...i will try them both!

Last night, I ate at a place in chandler called Pho Viet Nam that was fairly decent (yelpers love it), but I suspect there are better places out there! I will drive any distance, pay any amount of money, for good Pho! I moved here from Southern Califonia where there seemed to be 3 Vietnamese restaurants every block, so it has been difficult to find someplace great!

Da Vang is definitely worth checking out. I've also heard Maxim is good but haven't been so I don't have any firsthand experience. Don't let anybody send you Rice Paper or Slanted Rice (they are bland/inauthentic but get positive press).

Get on the light rail and take it to 19th Ave & Camelback. Walk east to 17th Ave and eat at Pho Thanh. Great pho and the people watching at the light rail platform is tough to beat.

I very much second this. Pho Thanh is definitely my favorite pho restaurant in the Valley.

Dined at Pho Thanh tonight myself. Place was packed to the gills.

Hope you get there (or another Vietnamese restaurant of your liking).
