Too much abuse of power to be Libertarian (Most of the people elected are not even close to be Libertarian, most are hardcore Conservative). The vibe of the people may be Libertarian but the elected officials are not (blame it voter apathy).

Conservative with a libertarian tinge. I don't think this state is socially liberal by any stretch of the imagination. The former constitutional ban on same sex marriage in Arizona was approved by voters ad medical marijuana was approved by only a margin of 4,000 voters, for example. The libertarian vibe comes from the lax gun laws. However, most conservative states have pretty lax gun laws. Arizonans like to call themselves libertarian, but when it comes down to it, it just conservatism. If we were a libertarian state, our laws would look a lot more like Nevada (legalized gambling, no state income tax, extremely lax alcohol laws, partially legalized prostitution). The next chance for Arizona to display is supposed libertarianism will come in 2016 when voters the recreational marijuana issue is brought to voters. I have a strong feeling that it will fail by a huge margin.

Saying you're "socially liberal, fiscally conservative" is so ridiculous... It just means "I'm ok with gay marriage and abortion, but I stand with the Republican party on everything else." You're just a conservative. Being "socially liberal" just means you're the same as the vast majority (over 70%) of millenials. "Socially liberal" just means you don't hate people who are different from you.

yeah, it does mean that which is the exact problem with about 90% of republicans in office. their social stances are unbearable for some & extreme enough to not be able to stand on that side of the street no matter how you feel fiscally.

I'm pretty sure it'll pass.

Libertarian.

Nobody cares what you do with your life socially as long as you don't touch the gun and fiscal issues.

Gambling is legal but is controlled by the strong Indian lobby, We have no other revenue for no state income tax (high property taxes is usually the trade off-Texas), we have lax alcohol laws (yesterday was a big victory for craft breweries), prostitution will not be legal in a state with a high Mormon/conservative population.

No state goes easy on drunk driving and the Arizona alcohol laws are as lax as I have seen. I think recreational marijuana will pass but will get tied up in the courts for a year or two (big revenue stream for counties and privatized prisons). It is sad that the prison lobbyist will be against recreational marijuana for the simple fact of money. It isn't because they care about the social aspects of marijuana but that the current laws keep them in business.

Gambling is under constant attack from our political leaders. The casino under construction at 91st Avenue and Northern? Still under attack while it's under construction. You say there is no revenue to replace an abolished state income tax. Nevada, Florida, Wyoming, and Washington manage somehow. Our liquor laws could be more lax. No open container law, permitting the sale of alcohol 24/7, etc. Your admission about the barrier to legalizing prostitution shows that Arizona is not libertarian. It is run by conservatives and a theocracy who think Liberatarianism means allowing guns everywhere and wearing cowboy hats in their political ads.

That's why voters approved a statewide constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, our former governor tried to get the Ten Commandments on display in a government building and our other leaders try to ram extremely restrictive abortion laws down our throats..... Personal freedom only applies to guns and the right to use your religion to discriminate against others here.
