I usually do Thursday-Monday trips out of PHX, and I'm looking for some creative alternatives to the East Economy lot. With the light rail going directly to the airport, what are some free parking options along the light rail line?

All of the light rail park-and-rides are free, but no overnight parking is allowed so that overnight travelers don't crowd out daily commuters. As the title of your post suggests, maybe you could find on-street parking somewhere in Tempe, but it would have to be on the east side of town -- away from Downtown and ASU. I'd say the Apache / Dorsey station is as far west as this would even be possible. Even so, you'll want to consider carefully if you want to leave your car unattended for several days on the street. One of the advantages of paid airport parking is that the garages are patrolled and subject to a system that requires a ticket for entry and exit.

Yeah, I wouldn't leave my car junker or not parked on the street for several days. It's cheaper to pay the parking or even the shuttle than to replace or fix your car.

If you're looking for creative ways find a friend to drive you to the airport or lite rail. I have a friend who lives 1/2 mi from a lite rail station. He would let me park my car there and walk to the station for a few days. Still, if I can't get a ride from a friend I'll take the shuttle. It has to be a special kind of financial hardship to be able to afford to fly but not to be able to afford the economy parking.

There is no free parking for the airport. Anywhere. You can leave your car virtually anywhere along the rail at your own risk of getting ticketed, towed or stolen and/or vandalized.

Sky Harbor just announced a promotional price of $5 per day for parking in the west park-and-walk lot during the month of March. That may help:

My concern would be whether or not there's a 72 hour ordinance. They take that stuff too seriously here.

yeah, I was wondering about this, too!!......

perhaps the "company" pays for his/her air tickets, but not for airport parking??...

but if he/she is paying for their own travel, the cost of the East Economy should not be an undue burden.....

Light rail doesn't go directly to the airport, it runs past the airport along Washington-Jefferson Street, and you can get off at 44th and take the skytrain into Sky Harbor.

I agree with the others, I wouldnt risk leaving your vehicle parked in a lot just to avoid paying airport parking fees.

Its a cheapskate way to go and it could end up being very costly in the end.

I'd just find a coupon and park at either Blue Sky Airport Parking or Sky Harbor Airport Parking. Yes, you can be paying $8/day but think of it as insurance against something much more costly.

I park at The Parking Spot at Van Buren and 40th street (parking spot 2). They have all sorts of discounts and most of those value mailers have discount coupons in them. They will also take coupons for other local parking places. And, if you go to their website and make a reservation, you get a bit of a discount. My AAA card also gets me a discount.

I joined their club and get free parking every 10 trips or so. Depends on how long you are gone. Nice drivers, good lot, decent price and it's tax deductible if you're going on business trips. Way better than risking street parking near the airport.
